2012 Maxima CLunking Noise
nissan dealers suck.
ive owned a lot of nissans over the years. most were pre-owned, but now that i buy new, and have had the displeasure of dealing with nissan service for warranty purposes, i can testify that 99% of them are lousy. if it's under warranty, they will NEVER find a problem. one mile past the warranty expiration though, and they want to change every part on the car. the deal with the sales department always goes beautifully. but service is a joke. when warranties are done, ill have my trusted friend, a REAL mechanic, work on my cars. im done with nissan as an option

Hello to all... I am a new member to this forum and signed up looking for answers to the limited amount of aftermarket parts for this vehicle. I own a 2009 Maxima SV and the one thing that I am trying to replace is the suspension. After reading through this topic and realizing that "clunking noise" seems to be an issue, I want to share with all of you that I don't think Nissan has truly figured out what the cause is. As the 2009 model, you all new it was the first year of the new body design and overall changes of the Maxima. The clunking noise appeared to be a suspension problem. My vehicle spent more time at the dealer than in my possession for the first 5 months with Engineers from Nissan trying to figure it out. The issue was never resolved and once out of the manufactures warranty, I was on my own, hence the reason for trying to swap out the ENTIRE suspension assembly with an aftermarket full coil over set up. I have to admit that it is pretty disheartening to read that the new 2012 models are still having the "clinking issue"...
Noticed the same thing on my 2012 and googled. I hear this noise (clunk) on my way to work, in the same exact spot, every morning. I pull out of my driveway, then turn right onto a hill that slopes downward. I always hear the noise at the same spot on the hill. I believe it is the ABS as previously mentioned - it only happens once per key cycle and only after the car has sat overnight.

ABS SELF CHECK NOISE
APPLIED VEHICLES: All Nissan Vehicles with ABS or ABS/VDC
SERVICE INFORMATION
If you identify:
• Clicking, knocking, clunking, buzzing, or thumping noise coming from the engine compartment area; and
• The noise occurs only once during the first few seconds of driving at approximately 16 MPH; and
• The noise occurs only once per ignition cycle (ignition OFF > ON) and does not occur again until the ignition is cycled.
NOTE: The noise may be louder after the vehicle has not been operated for a prolonged period of time.
The above condition is normal and does not need repair.
Each time the ignition is turned on and the vehicle is driven at about 16 mph, the ABS/VDC system performs a “Self-Check” to confirm components of the ABS/VDC system are operating correctly.
This “Self-Check” function creates the noise described above.
If the brakes are being applied when the “Self-Check” occurs, a vibration may be felt in the brake pedal and an increased level of noise may be noticed.
NOTE:
• Refer customers to the Owners Manual, Section 5, Starting and driving, Brake system on the Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS). The “Self-test feature” section provides additional explanation.
• The speeds described above refer specifically to Versa, Sentra, Altima, and Maxima. However, any vehicle fitted with ABS or ABS/VDC will have a “Self-Check” which is triggered in similar circumstances.
Nissan Bulletins are intended for use by qualified technicians, not 'do-it-yourselfers'. Qualified technicians are properly trained individuals who have the equipment, tools, safety instruction, and know-how to do a job properly and safely. NOTE: If you believe that a described condition may apply to a particular vehicle, DO NOT assume that it does. See your Nissan dealer to determine if this applies to your vehicle.

Just came from dealer today with a clicking clunk sound and it was determined that the factory didn't tighten the control arms and ball joint connector so the retightened them and aligned the car . The noise was loudest when I was parking the car and turning the wheel left and right to fit in the spot. Everything seems go to go now. Hope this help.
Mine actually has been very good about addressing any of my concerns. Though my 2010 has been a pretty good car so far.
...Welcome to the forums...
Adding to the thread in a slightly different direction, I can hear something like a clunk as well in my car, except I have narrowed it down to the air conditioning system vent control doors inside the center console area.
When I turn on the AC or Heat, sometimes the doors are stuck to whatever they are touching, and when the motors pull open the these doors, they "clunk" so to speak. It does not really bother me enough to warrant a trip to the dealer and have them try and grease it or something.
