2012 Paint quality
2012 Paint quality
Brought a 2012 Maxima in the new Java color. On checking out it out one night, I found that the paint had been sparsely sprayed on the interior door areas. There is missing base coat under all four doors, what looks like splatter sprayed paint covered by clear coat at the front of the frame on both side doors, the B pillar and on the doors themselves. On the right side B pillar there is a bare spot, along with the hinge areas. The trunk is sprayed with a light tan primer, not even the base coat. So it looks unfinished.
Contacted my nearest dealer. They sent me to their paint shop, took pictures and closed out my repair. Stating that due to the extensive repaint that I was not interested in a fix.
Mean while I had contacted Nissan and the consumer affairs rep informed me that the case was closed by the dealer. On explaining that I wanted this repaired, I was sent to another dealer and given an appointment for a regional service rep to look at the paint. After the appointment I was told that there was a few options Nissan was thinking about, including buy back. Then all went ghost. After a few weeks of trying to get in touch with Nissan. I was given another date to bring the car into the dealer and the regional rep would do a more thorough inspection. While waiting for a loaner car I noticed and pointed out that the B pillars had what looked like they were sprayed doubled. Anyway the car was picked up later in the day.
My point. Nissan never made a repair order, they went ghost again, while at the dealer I saw another Java 2012. It had the same problems. I went to another dealer and looked at a Java and it had the same problems.
It appears that it's a problem, possible computer programming when it comes to this color. The car in this color looks completely unfinished, poorly finished.
If anyone has a 2012 in Java. Carefully look over your paint. Right now I am interested in documenting this problem in as many cars as possible.
Thanks all

Sorry for the long rant. I actually brought the car from Carmax in April with 1300 miles on it. During my visits to the dealer. I found out that they actually sold the car in January 2012. The warranty started in January 2012. So it I'd definitely under warranty.
It seems strange that it would only be a problem with the Java color only. I would think the process would be the same no matter what color the car is.
I checked out my 12 Winter Frost that I've had for a month now and all looks fine in the areas you point out. I would be concerned as well. Curious to see what comes of your issue. Keep us posted. Good luck.

No not discontented. Just an issue of Nissan properly painting a 36K car or owning up to a factory paint problem. Since I deal in computers and have ever since 1973 starting with perf boards and op amps I do understand that a programming issue can happen. Especially since I have found similar problems on other 2012 Java editions. I been at this with them since May. One car was identical with the paint issues.
And my car was produced in 2011 as a 2012 model. The other car was produced June 2012. Not the work of a lazy worker.

No offense but I checked out a 2012 JAVA color at my dealership during service.
I thought it looked dirty and didn't even want to get close enough to give it a second look. What happened to ocean gray?
I do need to say that nobody should have to go through this if it is in fact a quality issue with the paint.
But unless this a "bait and switch car" you did sign the P/W and should have thoroughly inspected it prior to purchasing???
P.S.
Dark outside when you looked at it or even raining prior to agreement it is a no-no.
Good luck my friend.

Interesting observation on the Java only paint, I know from time to time cars do come through with certain issues, it all depends on the individual and what you can tollerate and deal with.
I learned a lot when I was younger working as a dealer tech, new cars are the greatest, soon as they sign them over and they are in the hands of the owners, they are currently no longer new and not the dealer/manufactures problem, with that any new car I have purchased, I look over fully and if the dealer can't remedy a small issue on the spot immediately I won't sign for it, just remember they are your greatest friend, you sign for the car and have a slight concern, they suddenly don't know you and don't have time for you

Actually I did look it over, as all the outside paint is excellent. It was a couple of days later looking at the car in my garage did I notice some slight imperfections in the paint when I had a door open. That's when I started to notice more. The dealer even found trash that was covered over by the clear coat. The trunk paint was passed as normal, until I looked at other Maxima's in other colors.
Irregardless of an initial buyers inspection. A warranty is a warranty, this is why there are manufacturers warranties. I did post pictures in the photo section.

Look at my beginning post. I didn't see anything wrong either until a few weeks after I got it home and closely inspected it. Could also be only ones made at a particular factory and it's only the Java color.
Trunk, finished in PRIMER, not even base coat..

Inside of rear drivers door...Only tip of the iceberg........

Wow that is really strange. The trunk blows me away. Looks like thetook a car and sprayed it a different color all together. I would tell them I want another car. I can't imagine that all the Java cars are like that. That is crazy.

Okay, I took some more pics, you can clearly see the paint problem
B-pillar paint shading, it's on both sides..

under a door... paint, primer, what?

more of the same door, couldn't do lambo doors. lol

Same door, rust starting? WTF. And the regional rep didn't see this?

B-pillar passenger side, around hinge, the light area right above it is primer, missed paint.

Trunk lid with over spray, and interior done in Primer? Looks like to me.

sorry for the long post people. All these areas are normally hidden from view, if I had seen all this before buying, it would have stayed on the lot.
Remember, this is a 2012, with 2400 miles, brought in April with 1300 miles on it.
Don't get mad, get even....................
If you are in a fare fight, then your tactics suck.....................

I almost have to wonder what really happen to your car and the other Java colors you said you saw on the lot, I would contact a lawyer, the dumbasses at the dealership are banking on the fact that you will eventually get tired of the back and forth and give up, a lawyer knows this and his/her job is to keep at it.
I would be concerned with not only the door jams but the entire painted body that is covered by the carpet and head liner, this paint is washing off in a matter of weeks and miles, how is it gonna be in a year.
With such a new car they should just take it back

Thanks for the responses people. I have taken the second step and gone outside of Nissan. I will know that outcome in about 30 days. If it is not favorable, then the 3rd step will be a lawyer.
For the record. The dealer was on my side. The regional rep is the one putting the brakes on. And to think he had it in a body shop on a lift twice for a THOROUGH inspection.

Wow, totally unacceptable. Keep us informed, man they should just replace it as Jspagna stated.........I definately would not want them pulling basically every panel apart on my brand new car to repaint it.......repainting is a whole other issue on a brand new car..

Yep, back in early June sent them an email and called, got a case number. This is how the car got inspected twice. With a possible settlement. Then they went ghost. After finally getting back in touch, I was told that they would offer me a service plan "for all my troubles". On reaffirming this, I found out it would be for ALL my troubles. Told them, no go and that I might seek outside help, I was told go ahead, that's what they are there for. So step two. Was advised that Nissan is looking at it " as acceptable paint ". Yeah right.
My bottom line is, if this is how Nissan is painting their flagship cars, then what else can you expect from them. I should have realized the BS, when the first week of having the car before I noticed the paint. I went to my dealer and asked for a gallon of antifreeze. On finding out that the blue special antifreeze was about $26 a gallon. I asked if there was a substitute, the PARTS MANAGER told me to just get the green stuff. Glad I got some sense. I complained to the service manager. It basically went no where. That's why my problem is being handled with a dealer 15 miles away is who is helping me and not the one that I could walk to

Wow, unbelievable. At my favorite Nissan dealer and guess what?
They got in a base 2012 Maxima in Java and the paint is almost identical, even down to the missed paint on the passenger b pillar. What is Nissan doing?

While your at it you should swing by a body shop, I tend to prefer the guys who brag about the quality of work they do on luxury/exotic cars, get an estimate on a full paint job
I would be willing to bet all the Java colors you have seen with the faulty paint, probably all ran off the line in the same batch, the vin numbers as well as any other identification numbers Nissan puts on the cars can isolate what cars, especially when they all have identical issues.

Probably off the same line, but batch, not.... Mine was produced in 2011 as a 2012 model. The other two I saw were produced somewhere between 4/2012 and 6/2012, the one today, they had just got in.......
I had went by a body shop last month, quick visual was about $3500. I intend to take it to 3 shops and get a full quote since they do it for free here.......
Well that's all folks, went to Carmax to get a quote in regards to the vehicle as is. To use at my BBB hearing Price quoted even with the paint problems was enough to initiate a buy back. Maybe when Nissan does quality paint, I might buy again. Thanks everyone.
