Nav update problem
Nav update problem
Has anyone had a problem updating their 2009 / 2010 nav system map data at the dealer?
These models have to go to the dealer, where they do an update using a code the owner buys from Nissan.
I've been to two dealers and neither has been able to get it done. The first one said their system was broken and could not connect to the Nissan server to get the data. They orders a new one but have yet to get it installed 1.5 months later.
The second dealer could not get their tool to connect to my Nav unit - no communications berween the tool and my car. They were stumped and tossed up their hands.
I'm reluctant to go to another dealer and waste more time, but I paid for the update and want it installed. Anyone have a similar experience?
On the plus side, the tech yesterday said my '09 was the cleanest 82,000 mile car he's ever seen.

I got my 2009 updated last year. My stealership had to order a special computer interface, so I had to go back a week later. But they were able to do it. Perhaps there is a member in your local area that can verify that a local to you stealership, can and has done the update.
I had the nav maps updated in my '09 back in fall of 2010. The car had been built in Sept 2008, and things were getting out of date. I paid the map vendor online and took my printed code to my dealer who installed the update free, and it took only around 20 minutes.
The dealer got a new computer, so I went back this past weekend for the Nav update. It took about 3 hours updating the software before they could enter my unlock code. Which then failed again. Not at all happy.
On the plus side, they made me a great offer on a new 2012 Max with premium and tech packages. I had put 83,000 miles on my 09 in 3 years, so i figured if i was ever going to trade in with decent value now was the time. So I walked out with a new car and updated maps.
Plus they took care of the map code I purchased.

So an update to your nav turns into an update of your entire transportation system. Considering the mileage you had accumulated, you were at a good point to trade for a new car. Once cars approach 100K miles, even the good ones begin to have nagging little problems.
The good thing about owning a 2012 Maxima is that the '12 is the 7.5 'half gen', meaning there will be almost no additional changes to the Maxima before the 8th gen arrives as the 2015 model in spring of 2014.
Congrats on your new ride.
Thanks. It's a bit like going to a game in the new Yankee Stadium. Everything is familiar, but slightly different.
I have been noticing some changes from the 09, not all of which are good. Some examples:
On the balance, I still love the Maxima. It's just interesting how manufacturers make changes between models years.
I have been noticing some changes from the 09, not all of which are good. Some examples:
- Side view mirrors. The driver-side mirror dims, but has a thick black bezel that surrounds it. Makes the mirror effectively smaller.
- Trunk. They deleted the nifty finger hold on the inside of the trunk, used to close it without geting finger prints on the trunk. I LOVED that handle, and HATE that it's gone.
- Trunk. They cheaped out on the trunk liner. Gone is the stiff trunk liner with sewn edges, and handle. Replaces with a ragged cut liner on top of a loose press-board support. Thankfully I notices it and grabbed the better quality liner out of my trade in.
- Trunk. Gone are the nubs to attache cargo nets in the niches on the sides of the trunk.
- Seatbelt. The buckle on the seat belt seems lighter somehow. The old one was a tad bigger and had a nice heft to it.
- Vents. On either side of the outboard vents are indicators for open closed; they used to be silkscreened white; now the are just raised plastic.
- Visors. The visors seem cheaper somehow, flimsier. But they do have an extension that slides out.
- Engine sound. The new sound seems quieter, higher pitched vs. the 09's lower growl. It's subtle but noticable if you drove an 09 for a while.
- Dash. Not a proponent of the blue/grey-tinted info center vs. the old orange color which I loved. The blue/grey gets washed out in the sun, where the orange was always visible.
- Nav system. Considerably better resolution. Getting used to the revised layout, which I think I will like. I have noticed that the traffic condition lines (green, yellow, red) are a bit too thin and can be harder to read vs. the older system.
- Audio. Sounds brighter than before. Nice.
- Audio. The iPod integration is better. Easier to navigate. The "Artist" selection is finally on the first page, and you can jump to the artist more quickly. When you have 400+ artist on your iPod and have to scroll through them all it was a bit much.
- Audio. Loving the Bluetooth audio integration. Also the enhanced XM: more stations, favorite artists.
- Steering wheel controls. Mostly the same. BUT: they changed the operation of the up/down/ENTER key for audio! WHY, OH WHY? Pressing down used to switch to the next higher station or track. It was ergonomically satisfying - flick the thumb down to go next. Now yo have to push UP to go to the next station / track, pulling your thumb out, down, then up. Sounds minor, but the other way was so much more natural. Why mess with a good thing boys?
- Leather color. The camel color from the 09 was subjectively better than the current latte color. The car felt warmer, richer somehow. The new color makes the car feel cooler, more aloof like a German car.
- Nav. Liking the three color scheme options - black, red, blue. Nice to have the option.
On the balance, I still love the Maxima. It's just interesting how manufacturers make changes between models years.
