iPhone 5....
I just plugged the new lightning cord into my USB connection 2010+ maxima. I have a 2012 with the latest maps and firmware and works great. Do not need an adapter.
The new connection the iPhone 5 is called Lightning. This is just the part on the phone; the other end of the cable is still USB.
As for the older model 7th gens, the iPod integration was with a special cable dictated to thniPosd, not a universal USB cable. The new iPhone may not work even with the adapter because the adapter does not support iPod interface controls.

I have a 2010 Maxima. I have not gotten the IPhone 5 (with lightning cable via USB port) or my newest Ipod Touch to work via the USB cable. I am also running into issues with the blue tooth connection via the Iphone 5 with the Maxima as well. It is frustrating.
I started this thread a little while back. Perhaps it will help everyone.

Confirmation.
I have a brand new iphone 5 updated to 6.0.2 OS. I also have a brand new 2013 Nissan Maxima and both phone and cable work perfectly in my car.
I am able to control my music on my steering wheel and dash controller.
My bluetooth connects perfectly and i have no issues with hearing or speaking through the car's bluetooth.
