2013 Navigation Update?

2013 Navigation Update?
Today at work I had to run down the street to grab some paint supplies so I grabbed the key to a used Maxima my job was selling on the lot. When I got in I noticed the navigation software was different! I have a 2009 SV so I guess mine has the old software. My question is do I have to buy the software to update mine or is it free? And does anybody with a 2009 have the update?

It costs in the neighborhood of $200 usd for the disk and then it has to be installed by Nissan for another cost of a couple of hrs at the shop rate. so it is expensive. I have a Garmin with lifetime map updates for way less than that. I wont get me another car with the nav system in it. unless they come way down on the cost of it.

The '09 Maxima uses a different map update system than the '10-'13 Maximas. I think a disk or something is used to update the 2010 - 2013 maps. But the '09 update comes as a code which the dealer uses to download the maps from Nissan into the car's navi system.
For the '09, we need to get online and order the new map update. It used to be through the NAVTEQ site, but in 2011, that changed to www.nissannavigation.com/x8green10.
The price is $149 plus installation, which varies by dealer. My '09 was built in Sept 2008, so I updated my maps in fall of 2010 when I received a sale price of $99 from NAVTEQ.
I have bought all my Maximas from my local dealer for over 15 years, and have all my scheduled maintenance done there, so he loaded my map updates at no charge. I think most dealers charge around $100,which makes the total price around $250, which I think is absurdly expensive. Especially since many residential roads near me that had been in place at least four years were not included in the update I bought.

Also keep in mind the '10-'13 w/ nav have a higher resolution screen than the '09. This was not obvious to me when I was looking at used 7th gens until I actually got in an '09. The '10-'13 nav screen, menus, etc look way better than the '09s (which I believe is similar to the non-nav screen in '10-'13).

I'm thinking of doing mine this year as I haven't updated them since I bought the car as I'm planning several road trips. The maps are at $99 til June. I'll have see what the dealer charges to install. Can anyone confrim if just the map data gets updated or do you get the new software as well. Can someone post pics of how the newer screens look like?

As my '09 was built in '08, I had my navi maps updated in 2010. I do plan on updating again before June 30, as I use the navi maps almost every time I use the car.

I purchased a code for the 09 and I have a 10, if somebody wants the update PM, and I will sell it to you for 60... Paid 149$ and Navteq wouldn't refund my money even when the dealer told me to get that code... It can only be used once, and they will lock it in to your VIN...

The 2010 uses DVD's to update. Not sure what that cost.

Wow! I try to be understanding about things, but that seems to be very high. It must be that the five disk set for the '2010 through 2013 is vastly more detailed than the navi data for the '09 (which has served all my needs very well).
I suspect there won't be many takes at this price. Maybe real estate agents, property assessors, and traveling salespersons. But not normal folks.

Why does the dealer need to do this? If you have the Nav ID code they should send the disk directly to you and you would do the update? I assume they code the DVD's with the ID# you give so they cannot be copied or shared?
I assume the dealer has an open license with their DVD's so they can update at will and charge the fee.
Am I missing something?

I have a 2010 and bought the 5 disc DVD set on sale last year. I am copying my post regarding that experience below:
"Well - I received and finally got around to installing the update. I must say that I am disappointed. None of the 3-4 year old road changes in the 50,000 population town I live closest to are updated.
The woman's voice from the voice guidance is updated. But the only significant change operationally is that route recalculations are significantly quicker.
I would have been better off getting a new Garmin or TomTom and suggest others go this route instead."

Got a letter from Nissan in the mail telling to update for $179 before June 30th to save from a regular price of $249. WTH, i have a 2012 that is barely 1 year old and they want me to update already. why wouldn't they just give us a detail of whats new like apple ios does before an update.. If you have a 2011 or 2012 and you update, please let us know whats new and the process to doing this

I got to say you are very lucky. I just called two local dealers to quote me the price to upgrade 2009 Nav software. One said 2 hours at $92/h, another said 1 hour at $108/h. Now add this to the price of update itself, currently at $99 promotional value. That's over $200 total.
Seems like you get ripped off with either 2009 or 2010-13 NAV software updates.
The most pathetic part is that service guy tells me that it really takes 3 hours to do, but he will do me a favor and only charge for 2 hours.
That's just to press a few computer buttons.
