Check out these recently applied tints. I used (1) coat VHT Nite-Shades over the back-up and turn signal lights and (2) over everything else. I masked the LED's so they would have NO tinting at all. After sanding I applied 6-8 coats of clear with more sanding and then polished and wax them with a DA.

looks cool man. So you masked out each individual place where the LEDs are?

Yep, I used vinyl tint material for masking and a round leather punch to cut-out the LED openings from a pattern taken over each light. Don't use masking tape for this. A lot of work, took me 2+ weekends to finish.

Washington State law says that safety illumination can not be masked or tinted...since he did not tint the LED portion, he has full brake / tail functionality, unimpeded by the tint.

So legally he's OK. He may get a cop with a wild hair up his butt to pull him over (especially in Edmonds / Brier area) but he's legal.

Looks beautiful!!!

edit - technically he's still illegal since he nightshaded the turn signals. HOWEVER, not only does it look factory...the tails and brake lights are the main priority.

Are turn signal, taillight or headlamp covers permitted?

No. Aftermarket styling ornament or other feature, such as tinted plastic or glass covers, a grille, or slotted covers shall be in front of the headlamp lens, or in front of any other lighting devices installed on motor vehicles. (WAC 204-21-230)

Thanks everyone...

Amerikaner sums it up well here for WA state at least.
Totally blacked-out tails, with fart can exhaust and irresponsible ricer driving will get you that unwanted LEO attention.
First ticket I get for just the tails I'll let you all know...

Thanks....luckily no inspections here including emissions for 09 + CARB vehicles.
I guess they could get sh!tty and say my turns and back-up lights are tinted and give me a ticket or more likely a warning to fix them.

Hey Dr_2010SV,
What would (1) coat VHT Nite-Shades over the chrome lift handle look like?

Probably look pretty good but thing you need to remember is that you will have to sand on the crome (paint) to get the nite-shades to adhere properly. Then sand again and then apply numerous clear coats then sand some more then polish and wax it out, it will look orange peely if you don't. Above all you would want to remove it from the car before starting any work IMOP.
I would try some plasti-coat first...you can always remove it if isn't what you want.

Funny you mention that as I did inquire about last years meet (via voting) but as it turned out couldn't make the date it was scheduled.

Really depends on your inspector.

Tails came out good. Any darker and it would not look good imo. Now all you need to do is debadge the trunk and get rid of that giant chrome bar.
