Steering Wheel Controls, Aftermarket Unit

So I got my new header unit in (woot!). My first time doing something like this alone and everything seems to work out nicely...

Except the steering controls. Always has to be something.

I wired up the Metra Axxess ASWC-1, follow all the instructions, red light flashes rapidly, I hold down the volume up button, lights start to flash green, I let go... then a series of red flashes. While holding the button down, I noticed that the volume of the stereo went down as well.

But nothing. I'm going to pull everything out tomorrow morning and give it a look, perhaps rewire the connections (I'm pretty sure I chose the right wires, but it is possible the wiretaps I used could be adding more resistance, screwing up the box. These are the kind of wire taps I used.).

I guess my questions are:
1) Who else is using the ASWC-1? If you are, did you have issues with the install? Does it take long to scan for the HU?
2) Did you connect wires directly to the factory wiring (i.e. cutting it from the harness, twist/solder) or use some sort of wire taps?
3) Where did you select your ground point? Did you make one? If you look in the pics below, the last one shows the ground to that L joint I made using a bolt and nut. The Axxess ASWC is grounded to that line (shared from the HU).

Thanks!

Anyway, some pics of the install for your viewing pleasure.

Alright just a short update: so I pulled everything out this morning, cleaned up the ground point. Reinstalled everything.

Got the volume to work. 3 buttons and one switch to go~

I'll try updating the firmware as well.
