Steering column motors went out!

Well they went out! Ill I hear is a whiny grinding noise. Luckily it's stuck all the way up so not a big pain but I have to admit feels like I'm driving a semi when turning. Kinda want to find one of those old semi steering wheel *****. Anyway I've read that this is an issue and I'm at 65,000 miles so I'm not under warranty. I'm pretty sure it's both motors. Anybody know where and what part #s I need to fix this myself. I'm not about to hand the stealership $800 plus. Thanks!

Go back to page three and there is a discussion on what people have done, I think on one of the posts have the part numbers. There isn't much you can do, have the dealer fix it, fix it yourself or leave as is. The first two represent a lot of dollars and time the last one is a PITA.
I have an 09 with 32000 on it, am just waiting for it to happen. Luckily I have an aftermarket warrany extention so only a 50 dollar deductible will apply.

yeah FYI, most of us have turned off the auto tilt feature on the steering wheel. its neat, but after you've had your motors replaced once you stop caring and prefer to have it last. its cool that we know what the motor part is now though, didnt used to

Well I'm pleased with the results of Nissans customer service. The first time I called I spoke to a rep that was rude and made it sound like the motors breaking was my fault, I hung up on him. I decided to try a different tactic and found Nissans Facebook page, sent a big ol PM and within 10 mins had a rep message me back wanting my contact info. She called me and said she would call be back the next day with a resolution. Called my today and they agreed to pay for everything except the $50 as if my car was still under warranty even though its at 65,000. Lol the power of Facebook.

Lol not a pic but this is the message.
I have a 2009 Maxima SV with 65,000 miles on it. The steering wheel motors just went out. Called my dealership and was told that I'm outside of the warranty and that with the parts and labor I'm going to be paying a minimal of $800.00 to fix the issue. An issue that can not be caused by the driver but is the fault of poor parts used by Nissan. I called customer service and spoke with a very rude rep by the name of Ivan and was told that I would have to take up the issue with my local dealer. I've now read several forums from other Nissan owners and they've had the same issue. This should be covered as a recall! Please help me get this worked out. I'm a loyal Nissan customer as I also have an 07 Altima. I've never had any issues with these cars and to find out that the customers are being the ones charged to fix this error is ridiculous.

I take it in Saturday to be fixed. Called the tech manager to set up the appointment and he sure was nice. He knew I'd be calling.

I know, it's frustrating to say the least.
With mine I can turn it off and I have.
You will almost never see a "recall" for an issue like this especially when there is no safety problem proven to be involved.

When/or/if/ Toyota make a car with the same appeal of the Nissan Maxima I would likely be all over it.
But they don't....bring on he 8th gen please!

Well they ate fixed. Runs smooth and quiet. The tech manager said and I quote "we've replaced them with better parts so these shouldn't EVER go out" lol I told him I'd hold him to it.

Finally got my steering column diagnosis today, and yup, motor is shot. Told the dealership to hold on the repair until I finished working with Nissan Corporate to get Nissan to cover it at which time I'd bring it back in to them to do the repair. The dealership called back 30 minutes later and basically said in an effort to keep me as a loyal customer in the future he called Nissan Regional, explained the situation, and got them to cover it 100%. Has the part in stock and is replacing today. Couldn't believe it, very happy that the dealership stepped up like that.

good to hear that. doesnt surprise me that Nissan isnt challenging it though, pretty wide spread issue that should be a damn recall at this point.

That's a great dealership to hold on to, I fought with mine and they didn't cover ****! and I even had the extended warrenty that doesn't cover the motor by itself but covers the entire steering column!

Are the motors going bad because of the up and down on entry exit? I have 22k and now you guys are making me worry.

Had mine replaced on my '09 earlier this year and they were covered under the Gold Preferred warranty, $50 deductible as I recall. I do not have access to the paperwork as I am 400 miles from the car but can post later if necessary.

Presumably that is the case. If you start hearing a squealing sound when the auto exit feature is moving the wheel, then worry.

Yeah I was told that only the Gold covered it, I bought my car used and the highest one for used cars was the preferred, which doesn't cover the motor itself! I was told you can only get the gold from purchasing the car new. I actually got the print out that shows me everything my warrenty covers and that fricken motor wasn't one of them
