Vinyl Wrapped My Mirrors

Used 3M 1080 gloss black vinyl to wrap my mirrors this past weekend. All that I needed was a heat gun and exacto knife. I decided to remove the mirror caps so I could wrap the vinyl around the edges and get a nice perfect seam.

Ordered a 5ft x 6ft piece of the same vinyl which should be here tomorrow. Wrapping the roof and window trim this weekend. I'll post pics when that's done.

Here are some pics....I removed the tint from the mirror turn signal after these pics were taken. I like the contrast of the black mirror and white turn signal better than the tinted turn signal.

Looking good! Curious to see how the roof will come out and match the mirrors.

Any update on the progress of the roof wrap....I got quoted $500 from a vinyl wrapping place here in LA. Thinking about asking the guy who tinted my windows for a quote.

Anyways, steps and difficulty factor would be great to get some feedback on!

I have the vinyl but haven't had a chance to wrap the roof just yet. The process is pretty simple though.

First I will drop the headliner inside the car and remove the antenna from the roof. It's a lot easier to wrap the roof without the antenna in the way. I will wrap the antenna separately and reinstall afterwards.

To wrap the roof is easiest with 4 people, that way one person can be on each corner of the vinyl and pull it tight and lay it down onto the roof. This eliminates a lot of work with the squeegee because most of the roof gets covered perfectly and only the edges will need heat/squeegee.

The hardest part is trimming the edges perfectly. The sides are easy because the long trim pieces are removed prior to wrapping, so the vinyl can just be cut neatly in the ridge and then the trim reinstalled over it. Where the vinyl meets the front and back windshield is a little harder and takes some precision with an exacto knife. Just take your time.

As soon as I wrap the roof i will put up some pics. Probably doing it this weekend.

Good stuff man. What prep work are you doing to the roof prior to install?

Cleaning it up w/rubbing alcohol, claying it?? Removing chrome trim that runs along the roof, curious about that as well.

Is it worth applying wax immediately or after a few days....?

I like the way your side mirrors came out. Looking forward to seeing how your roof comes out.

No claying or waxing, just a good cleaning with alcohol. The car is only a few months old so the paint is spotless as is. The alcohol will remove any grease or dirt. I'll also remove the black trim that runs up the sides which is held in with small clips.

I wouldn't wax the vinyl. I use quick detailer to clean it.

Gonna be doing this tomorrow so I will post pics sometime over the weekend.

Thanks. I also wrapped a roof spoiler in gloss black vinyl which I will be installing at the same time I wrap the roof.

I thought about doing the same exact thing last nite, but may just purchase it painted gloss black so I don't have to wrap that too, then again I can't decide between going matte or gloss.

It's real easy to wrap the spoiler so don't shy away from it. I went with gloss black because I wanted the mirrors, window trim and roof to all match and I think the gloss looks better in this situation. Besides, the stock trim around the mirror is gloss black so I didn't want to clash with that. I also wrapped the chrome trim on my front grille, leaving the gunmetal ribs alone. Came out nice
