CXJ Performance 7th Gen Maxima High Flow Cats

CXJ Performance owner and operator Cory Xavier James is well underway with his latest project - High Flow Cats for the 7th Gen Maxima. I will be involved in the prototype testing, as usual, as this process moves along. Labor will most likely be a bit intensive to get these installed but I will be working with my friend to put together the installation write-up as well as giving some shop recommendations in the DMV area for shops that can install for you without taking you to the cleaner. There will be dyno pulls using my car (and MPH dyno to show before/after gains) and since the OEM-precat part number matches some Altima part numbers there is a possibility we could see some dyno pulls on a manual with this exact part.

Here is the only sneak peak photo being released so far. Subscribe to this thread.

I wonder what would need to be done to fit existing headers on this thing? Such as say the Altima or older version Maxima versions?

Ahh hell yeah... This sounds awesome.

This and the ypipe are sure to get awesome power gains... I just need to convince the wife so I can get them. Ha!

I am assuming it will just add on to the overall exhaust performance of the car. The stock catalytic converters are power prohibitive and having these hi flo cats will really open up the exhaust passages to help the exhaust air flow out much faster and with much less restriction, meaning more power!

This looks like an awesome project. Much needed since the Altima and 350z have aftermarket hi flo cats out there.

CXJ or Ghozt, what brand hi flo cats you using? I assume some kind of universal part with custom piping?

Correct - this is where you're going to see nice gains - I'm thinking we could easily see an additional 10-20 horses to the wheels.

Cory is using Magnaflow metal core high performance high flow catalytic converters - not the cheap stuff with ceramic cores.

I wonder if therr be any difference in emissions output?

I'm sure there will be a difference with the more free flowing, so it will probably read a little higher than normal. And no you shouldn't have to drop the Motor to put on the Hi Flo Cats.

Not sure - I know a guy in NY had some Altima headers welded on to his 7th gen before he traded it for an Evo. I wouldn't be surprised if the exhaust manifolds are completely different and he literally just used the piping.

Back when I had my 2005 350Z, I used a power drill and super long drill tips to hollow out the OEM cats. Took me about 5 hours and a bajillion bits but made the exhaust meaner and added a top-end power.

No info on exact pricing yet, Cory's still modifying the final design and some of his changes may affect how much it costs to produce and subsequently the pricing. Obviously he is trying to keep costs low while keeping the unit high quality. Hence him going with Magnaflow metallic cores instead of cheap ceramic stuff.

as a reference point though, looking at Berk HFC's for the Z's they start around $600 so I'd expect the pricing to be somewhere around there.

Awsome, great info, thanks Ghozt!! Who am I kidding, I know I'll purchase a set no matter the price. Lol! Cory take my money! Lol!!

I guess it is too early to ask estimated cost for installation to have a pro to do it ?

Not sure yet. Nissan's estimated labor for replacing the oem pre-cats is something like 10 hours of labor which is insane; neither Cory nor my boy who is doing the install (Baker Performance) think its going to take that long. Cory commented that the 7th gen has more room to work than the 6th gen in this area, so that could also indicate an easier install than expected. I believe other VQ platforms it is usually 4-5 hours.

On a side note, I just shipped my OEM Y-pipe to Cory today in hopes that maybe it'll encourage him to build a CXJ Y-pipe. My Racingline one works, but it looks like **** now like they used cheap metal and of course the AAM exhaust guys have to modify it to get their exhausts to fit.

Would you guys be interested in a higher quality y-pipe that is the same exact fitment as OEM instead of 1/2" longer? Or is everybody happy with their Racingline one? I wonder if a different design or intake diameter could produce different gains for us.

Yeah, I'm interested. Don't like the idea of hacking up the racingline one.

I'm interested in the y pipe. Was thinking of grabbing the Racingline one later this month to throw on with a Borla exhaust. I can wait on the Y pipe if there are any eta's in place....

Haven't been under my car in a while and looked closely at my RacingLine ypipe. Dan, is yours just LOOKING ugly, or is it actually starting to rust and fall apart?

regarding the install, for you guys who are curious check out the Berk HFC install on the 350z. it will most likely be a similar process including the bolt you need to take off through the engine bay. the biggest pain appears to be the "Devil bolt" or "Demon bolt" as some call it, basically one of the bolts has to be taken off going from the top through the engine bay and this is what a lot of backyard mechanics get stuck on. http://my350z.com/forum/vq35hr/45105...2008-350z.html

regarding gains, im expecting a ~10-15 WHP gain which is similar to gains provided on other VQ platforms. with a tune it would be even better I imagine so those of you with Uprev like me plan on retuning afterwards. the tune with a fully opened exhaust i think will really surprise us.

Since I am considering my next purchase to be an exhaust, I would be interested in a good quality y-pipe since I hearing the current option won't seem to hold up for a few years.

Thanks

I just had a 20x9 square setup, but would at least get the 20x10 in the rear if I did it again, but the 20x10.5 fits with no issues as well.

I will miss this setup, smh

But back to the topic at hand...

Can't wait for these HFCs to come out and big ups to Cory for making products for our car.

Definitely will keep an eye and ear out for the HFCs and possibly a y-pipe.

The RL Y-pipe, I have one also and had to cut about 1/2 piece out of it to make the AAM exhaust fit also. It was not butchered and I think it looks pretty good.

I'm jumping on board aswell, if he can make a better design and better quality part from front to back in a new y-pipe (maybe 3") I will definably buy one. I'm iffy on the high flow cats at the moment and have to see what will be and the final cost on them and the labour involved to get them installed.
