HID problem... need advice

2009 SV w/ HID lights car has 37k mikes.

First my left light went out then about a week later my right light went.
(friggin extended warranty doesnt cover them).

I installed new HID bulbs but still nothing.

The passenger comes on for a few mins then goes out.

I'm thinking the ballast / controller units are bad... has anyone ever seen BOTH go bad within weeks of each other?

Any idea how difficult they are to replace?

Thanks
D.

I've never seen both ballasts go out at the same time but anything is possible I suppose.

Have you checked any fuses?

i think someone else was having a similar problem with both HIDs going out in a short time span.

you might try searching for that thread, there was quite a bit of troubleshooting advice IIRC

I think it's worth it to change the entire kit. This way you don't end up with color mismatch. Also, it doesn't cost much any way (approximately $50 on Amazon). I did the same thing when one of my bulbs and ballasts went out.

If the car has aftermarket HIDs, then it is quite possible for them to die prematurely. There are a lot of cheap kits out there that really do not hold up well, so when doing the upgrade, my advice is always to spend a little more, and not only get a GOOD quality kit, but also to have it installed by someone who can do it professionally. Bad wire connections due to corrosion aren't uncommon with cheaper HID kits, or bad installation.

To add to the above post, I recommend The Retrofit Source here: LINK
They have really good customer service, and good OEM parts. It is a bit pricey depending on your budget, but if you want quality, I recommend them.

Similar Issue

I'm having the same problem but it's only happening on the drivers side low beam. I've checked the fuses, the ballast with a voltage meter, put in two new HID Bulbs and it is still now working. I'm completely stumped and frustrated! 2010 Nissan Maxima SV. I posted on here today and haven't had any luck. Let me know if you figure out the problem and I'll do the same. Good luck!
