Buyer Beware, 2009 - 2013 Factory Bearing Problems
#601
So i actually bought the heat resistant gloves and also went out of my way to buy a mechanics stethoscope. While on jack stands, i got under the car and checked for any loose shields, it seems like both converters are fine on that. But with the help of my buddy, i was able to verify its the front cat converter generating the noise. As soon as he lets go of the gas, the sound is much more evident and was able to isolate it with the mechanics stethoscope. What do you guys think about buying a used cat converter (From a junk yard)? Or should i buy a new one? Thanks so much for your help guys!!

Well...I just sold my 14 Max today(10k miles) and I really loved the style and ride but there were numerous reasons why I disliked the car. ie.. Constant steering corrections at highway speed, a loud metal popping noise on left turns, a/c vent doors in dash make noise when turning a/c on or off, brakes grabbing, jerkiness of CVT, didn't handle bumps well after 2 struts replaced, starting to hear bearing noise, and after a year and a half of ownership, I still couldn't get use to the CVT and how sluggish from start is was. Also tired of paying for premium gas. I'll probably get flamed but that's ok... at my age I don't need all of these problems. I enjoyed this forum over the years although I didn't contribute much. I see more negative posts and problems with this car than positive.
So goodbye and thanks for all of the informative posts.

It's too bad you had those issues. People are more prone to post negative things....reason it may appear that more people are having issues, when in reality most people are not. i myself am still very happy with my ride. Good luck with your new ride.

Just rolled 40,000 miles and it's been a great car. No major problems to speak of. Only thing I've had done was had to have the head liner replaced and put new tires on it. Oh and I had the rocking seat replaced under warranty too.

Lucklily im under warranty by i have a leaking head gasket found it while doing routine 60k service now i need that fixed along with rear breaks
anyone else think 300 for rear brake replacement with resurface on rotors feel high?

Hey guys, I've been looking at youtube video reviews of the new maxima. Call me paranoid but can you hear something familiar at around 4 min 32 sec into the video? Btw. I have my own story to share about this engine knock crap, which I will post, but first I'll record and post a short video of my engine noise.

There is some info in the description about the whole situation. The knock is pretty audible. What do you guys think?

All aluminum engines are noisier. The idle speed in park doesn't let the torque converter load up the engine and the engine sounds lousy as a result.

I have a 09 with 93,000 and it runs perfectly. I have been reading through the post trying to spot any 09 with the bearing issue. Looks to me like I'm safe.
This is the 1st max I've owned and I love it. I bought it used from the dealership in September 2014 and like I said its ran smoothly so far.
I am, however, wondering is there any 09 owners with the bearing issue. Nissan hasn't extend the power train warranty so I'm out of luck if mine goes bad.

This is not engine knock in this 2011 Maxima, this is normal engine noise for VQ35DE. The video of the new 2016 Maxima with the engine running sounds perfectly within the realm of normal for this engine. Even if Nissan says that they have replaced over half of the parts in the 2016 Maxima engine = still sounds the same to me )

So my maxima 2012 with 69k is making that knock noise so I took it in and tbe mechanic said that it is a problem but if it isn't giving me issues right now I should jus r leave IT and bring it in before the warranty runs out .. What do you guys think I should do
#617
Hasn't your factory warranty already run out with 69K?

In the last year I had the car inspected by 3 different dealers for this problem, and i printed and brought the bulletin with me. THis is actually 4 inspections, because at my own dealer I had it inspected twice, second time from different mechanic, because I didn't trust the first one.
I am not saying they are right because I do hear something, but all 4 inspections told me this is not bearing knock and my engine is good. The only explanation for the knock was that the chain is hitting the gear box on low rpm or something like that.
This is no longer a new car for me, so I don't have so much passion. My girlfriend is driving the car anyway, what a 37 000 dollar present that was. I have lifetime warranty on transmission and engine and they assured me if a bearing problem did arise at some point i would be covered. So .. i don't give a flukk any more. This is my last maxima for sure, and prolly the last nissan to be honest.

Can I sue the Dealer in Civil Court?
I have a Nissan Maxima 2009 with 81k miles on it. It had warranty up until November 24 2014 or 80k.
It has the Stillen CAI, stillen exhaust system and the Racingline y-pipe.
My problem was an engine rattling under 1k rpm and after the car warmed up. I thought maybe it was the TSB from this thread. I took the car to the dealer in May 2015, told them my issue. They had the car for 11 days. Came back with them saying that I needed my Y-pipe replaced. I tried explaining to them that it was impossible because the y-pipe did not have the converter. The advisor repeatedly assured me that my engine was fine. Even told me that it was the master technician who took a look at my car. To me this was a relief, but I still declined the repair because they were charging me $1050 for a new FRONT TUBE/CAT CONV without labor or taxes, and I knew it was impossible for the y-pipe to be bad.
I was advised on this thread that it may be something loose from the exhaust system. So I went ahead to take the car to an exhaust system specialist. The specialist inspected and took everything apart, my exhaust system was 100% fine so I didn’t need anything replaced.
On my way back to the dealer, on the highway, my car stalled, shut off, and never turned on again. I had to get it towed. I went to the dealer, told them that they misdiagnosed my car and that they should pick up the car and fix it. The head of service said that before that I would have to get the car diagnosed by a Nissan dealer. I had the car towed to a different dealer since it was closer. The diagnostic came back 10 days later, the master technician said I need a new long block. The cause was bad timing of the engine. I have bent parts in the engine.
So basically, the first dealer failed to detect that my engine timing was off. As a result, the bad timing made the car stall and bend internal engine parts.
Can I take this case to Civil Court? Do I have a reason to believe there was negligence on their part?
I also mailed them a certified letter of intent to sue them with a deadline to fix my car at their expense. Still haven’t gotten contacted back and every time I call the head of service, he is not there. I have recorded all conversations over the phone, and all the voicemails I have left. I have my best friend as a witness who has accompanied me every time I went to the dealer. I have the diagnostic form from the second dealer specifying the cause of damage (bad timing). The misdiagnosis form from the first dealer specifies that I took the car in for an engine rattle. I also have all records of my expenses after the misdiagnosis.
any advice is greatly appreciated. Thank you so much!!

YES!! I DO. I posted it on this thread back in May right after i took it to the dealer and they had told me it was the FRONT TUBE/CAT CONV

Yep, I remember your video. It was actually hard to pick up any sort of knock because of your aftermarket exhaust. Anyway, keep us informed how things go. Good luck.

Can you elaborate a little more on your thoughts on incompetence and not negligence? Thank you!!!
#626
My thoughts with short analogies
Incompetence - Not having or showing the necessary skills to do something successfully.
I wired in a circuit in my home and it immediately tripped the breaker. I was incompetent because I lacked sufficient training and skills to do it correctly.
Negligence - Failure to take proper care in doing something.
I built a campfire and it started a wildfire. I was negligent in that the fire was my responsibility and I did not take due care to keep it under control.
Granted that both could be used with each analogy, but that is what lawyers are for, to sort out the grey areas.

2010 maxima S-48000 miles-engine is a knockin
Great, just noticed this exact noise (I listened to the video on page 1) and of course my car went out of warranty 4 days ago....4.d.a.y.s. ago. I think I will go jump off a cliff now. I still owe 11 grand on this car and I am saving for a wedding, there is no way in @&%#$^ bleep I can afford a repair like this...I'll just have to ride my horse to work or turn around and sell the thing before it's worthless. Those that somehow talked Nissan into the gold warranty, did you have to pay for the repair and Nissan threw this at you as an added incentive or the repair was free AND they gave you the gold extended warranty to keep you extra happy? I first thought it was the injectors but it's not coming from the top of the engine. I am too scared to take it into the dealership now but I suppose I have no choice...

Holy crows get a grip on yourself the world is not coming to an end. You probably had that knock for a couple of years and never noticed it until you read about it in this thread. There are members here that have had the knock for years and put of thousands of miles on their cars without any noticable problems other than that knock. If you don't have any warranty left than you bear all the expense if you decide to have it done. If it were my car I would keep it until such time as I could afford to get something else but I would not get it fixed without any warranty.
#632
Glad to have helped. For a little piece of mind, I have never heard there was a engine failure on a 7th gen maxima due from the bearing knock that a number of members on this forum have reported. Make sure you keep up with the maintenance and use a good quality engine oil and filter on changes. Enjoy the wedding.

It could be exhaust or intake, either way they should not need to wait for one since it would be used from your old engine. Interesting.

Other Nissan main bearing problems
Seems like maximas aren't the only Nissans with the main bearing problemss; Here is a video/youtube channel of a UK Nissan tech/mechanic dealing with similar bearing issues. Maybe we can find some answers on this guy's channel.

2012 maxima, 48K miles, we are the original owner and this car has not been driven hard at all... It is going into the shop tonight to have the #1 main bearing replaced under warranty.
I am not impressed with NISSAN on this one, you would think a company this big would put better quality product/workmanship out the door. We will now own a car that we payed good money for NEW with this black eye on the service history.
I hope the mechanic knows what he is doing and everything goes back together like it should. Freaking Stressed!!!

For what it's worth, I have a 2012 also that I bought new Jan 2014, now with about 25k miles. It had the knock since about 12k miles and I had the number 1 bearing replaced at the end of December under warrenty. Took about 3 work days to complete the job and they provided a rental car. Everything went well, noise is gone and the car has been running great for the last 2k miles with no issues. In the past Nissan has provided short blocks and some long blocks and gave additional warranties. I think those days are now gone and they are just sticking to the TSB which says don't replace the engine replace the bearing only. Some people who got new engines had the same problem return. Can't understand why this has gone on for so many years but replacing the bearing seems to have fixed my problem for now. I imagine it will for you as well but let us know your results. Ask for more warranty but don't be too surprised if the answer is now no even tho they have given them in the past.
