I saw this in another thread and didn't want to hijack the thread.

If you've seen my thread, i put 225/55/17 on my maxima, which is the stock setup for infinity. My car is incredibly quiet up to 40-45 MPH, I honestly have never been in a quieter car. But when I get on the hwy, the mirror wind becomes excessive and very intrusive, perhaps amplified by the fact that there is almost no audible tire noise. The windows seem pretty well insulated as well. All in all I find the noise insulation in my maxima perfect.

I am really interested in buying a smaller mirror with better aerodynamics. Don't care about looks much. I get on the hwy alot and this would be a sweet ride without the mirror noise.

So has anybody seen something? Or can anybody develop something?

I am sure I can sell the stock mirrors for a good amount, so replacing them wont be too expensive..

 

Our side mirrors are relatively big and it is because of that gap between the mirror and the car itself that is responsible for that cacophony. Some one mentioned putting something in that space to stop the noise.

I've never seen any aftermarket mirrors for the Maxima but I'm sure there are some on good old eBay.

 

I'm hoping just mounting some type of small fins or something to redirect the airflow will quiet that down. I would imagine most mirrors generate some noise at higher speeds.

Funny thing is I had that same noise in my 1998 and always wondered what was causing it. Then I noticed my 2014 had the same noise. Solved the mystery after 16 years.

 

I had this issue and brought it to the dealer, they replaced the mirror and wind noise is gone. Covered under warranty as well

 

You can experiment with blue tape and see if you cover the gap on both sides mirrors if the noise quiets down at all.

 

You can stick your hand in the gap between the mirror and the car while driving and the noise goes away.


How would changing the mirror with one of the same design make any difference?

 

I wasn't going to ask the same thing. Maybe he was referring to a similar issue like something being loose on the light itself.

Has anyone taken the mirror off to verify that its the main source of the noise? It seems that the door handle would make noise too. The mirror is closer to our ears.

 

I wasn't there when they did the work so I'm stating what I was told, whether they replaced the mirror or just stuffed something in this "space" your talking about the problem was solved. Anyways the repair order stated that they replaced the mirror. I understand what u mean, but there have been others here that have had the same issue in which the dealer "replaced" the mirror and the problem was solved. Use the search you'll see this issue has been discussed numerous times

 

can you post the receipt for the work here?

Don't mean to doubt or offend you, but it might be very helpful for us to print it and take it to the dealer. I know what my dealer is gona say if I tell him about the mirror noise. What noise, I don't hear no god dam noise.

 

I sure will when I can locate it, it's either in my car or in a stack of papers at my mothers. If for some reason I can't locate it, next time I'm at the dealer I'll have them print it out as I'm sure it's saved in the system. Also the day I brought my car in for the noise, the technician took the car out himself and came back saying they could hear the noise. They kept my car and gave me a loaner, it took them about 4 days to diagnose the cause. First they replaced all the weather stripping which did not make a difference, tried adjusting the door itself and didn't make a difference. Until last they replaced the mirror, or so they said. I knew it was the mirror before I brought it from googling it and checking here. It's also a known issue with the altimas as well with replacing the mirror being the same solution. I believe I read on a Altima forum that nissan knows about this and the cause is defective from the factory

I really don't think it is the handles. I hear it in the area of the mirror and as others have done, I've put my hand in the gap to cover it and the noise is significantly lower. It really could be a myriad of things sticking out on the car on the sides and the bottom that are contributing but I've always heard that loud noise in the side mirror area even with the windows up on the highway.

@VIPMaxima Maybe that thing in the middle of the mirror and the body of the car, or lack of it, would be the culprit.

 

It only requires a small modification, kind of what Chevy did for the Volt. I'm sure Nissan will come out with a new design any day now. NOT!

Judging from the looks of the new mirrors on the 8th gen, they may not have to worry about this anymore.

Went to the dealer with a copy of his receipt and the dealer replaced it without investigation. I don't know if they are aware of this problem so they don't bother investigating or what, but there was no inspection on the stock mirror, they proceeded to replacement immediately.
I know it defies logic but the noise is GONE. I was suspicious myself when I heard from Tommy but since the car was under warranty..
Beware that is is somewhat intrusive procedure - I saw a pimple-faced teenager take my whole door apart. Made me really nervous. I inspected the door for rattles when the car was done. After 30 mins of driving everything appears tight, but I hate when they take stuff apart.. rattles will eventually appear there. Make sure you certainly have an issue and not normal noise, because you don't want your door taken apart for no reason. My mirror had a distinctive whistle.. whistling noise.. much stronger than the normal ambient noise. The passenger side mirror did not have the whistling noise. Hope this helps and thanks again.

 

I'm glad everything worked out, and I'm pretty sure this is turning into a known issue. Surfing around different nissan forums I've seen altimas and pathfinders with the same issue. One person stated it's a defect when installed at the factory. Good luck with everything and if your like me you'll sleep better at night

 

I had a weird whistle coming from my driver's side mirror at speeds of 50mph and above. Looked at it and there are holes covered on the bottom of both mirrors with some sort of black tape in the shape of a circle, but one hole was missing the tape. Put electrical tape over it and all fixed for me.

 

I never looked it over myself, just brought it straight to the dealer. That could be the issue or not
