Knocking when coming to a stop

Recently I've noticed a slight knocking noise when coming to a complete stop. It doesn't do it when slowing down from one speed to another. Only when stopping and the car gets below about 10 mph. The rhythem of the knocks coincide with the speed. There's more knocks at 10 mph than there are at lesser speeds so it has to be something rotating and since it doesn't start doing this until the car is almost stopped, it leads me to believe it's something affected by centrifugal force. Also it only happens when going forward.

Anyone ever experience this? I've read all about the ABS noise and I don't think that is the problem. It occurs at all times and not just on startup. I can hear it pulling up to the stop sign on my street when I first leave the house and when getting to a red light or stop sign 35 minutes later at work

What octane gas are you using?

93 most of time. Occasionally I'll put 87. I'm almost certain the noise isn't coming from the motor or else it would happen while idling in the driveway.

87? Really? That's just being cheap and more than likely what's causing you're problem.

93 isn't required but why would you run 87 in this car? If you wanted to run regular gas then, no offense but you should have just bought an Altima..

On top of that, each time you gas up, do you have a sticker on the inside of the filler door that says "premium fuel is recommended for maximum performance"?

What year? Mileage? Any modifications to the car? Is it loud enough to maybe get a video? I personally use nothing but 93 or 91 octane, although the one time I tried 87 the car ran like poop shuddered and idled rough.

Not trying to ruffle any feathers here but are you guys serious? Who cares if a tank of 87 octane runs through it every now and then. You guys act like these engines have 12:1 compression like an exotic does but you're sadly mistaken. Do you think the average soccer mom that drives these, let alone your average person, really fills up with 93? Highly unlikely. The worse that will happen is retarded timing.

I know this was my first post on this forum but trust me, I'm no newb when it comes to mechanics. I simply asked my question hoping that someone has experienced this so that I could start the process of elimination.

Don't use 87. You should be running no lower than 89. I'm no mechanic but I would think that most of your problems are caused by the type of gas you are using.

What type of wiper blades are you using? Just kidding, welcome to the org.

Does the noise appear to come from the wheels, front or rear? Engine area? Trans?
Maybe some part of the exhaust is loose. Have you checked anything under the car?

Whatever the wife tells me to buy. Lol jk It sounds as if it's coming from the front passenger side. Possibly the hub assembly? The exhaust is stock but I did check ther just to be sure. Everything checked out. Visually everything under the car is fine.

Go to AutoMD, I'm sure they'll have an answer for your question, or you know, go to a real mechanic..

Good luck!

Looks like some people stopped reading as soon as they read the word knock.

The hub assembly is easy enough to check. Just raise the wheel off the ground and see if there's any play in the wheel. The entire assembly should be rock solid. Check all four. I had a rear wheel bearing go bad and the transfer of vibration and noise made it feel and sound like it was coming from the front...

I dont get the fuel comments... The level of mechanical knowledge/aptitude on this board is pretty low!!!

Yeah we're (specifically me) pretty stupid..

You seem like you nailed it on the head though, so you're obviously more qualified than me..

But when I hear about "knocking" and then hear about using regular fuel in a car that requires or even "recommends" it I don't think it's uncalled for to think engine knock.

It's obvious "terms" were confused here so I apologize.

I still however stand by my original statement and say it's stupid to run lower than 89 octane in this car, but who knows maybe he thinks his car is an Altima 3.5 with a body kit. lol

None the less, I hope the OP figures out the problem and it's nothing too serious/expensive!

I was thinking it could be a wheel bearing. If so that's an easy fix. Did you replace yours with an OEM hub or does someone like Moog make suitable replacement? That's a good tip about checking the back also. Thanks

I've replaced hub assemblies on a few vehicles but not my Maxima yet. I always buy then from Napa, or associated auto here in NJ. Timken is the brand I usually get and haven't had any issues. They look OEM to me.

If u answered my original questions I may be able to help. Car year? Mileage? Any mods to car? I'm thinking it sounds like the strut insulators and depending on the year of the car might fall under the 09-10 maxima strut recall for the insulators

Is my sig not visible to everyone else? It only shows up in my first post for me but it says 2011 model and it's got about 80,000 miles on it. I'm pretty sure I answered that last night. As far as mods go, the car is bone stock.

I gotcha and sorry no I can't see anything. I remember back before I insyalled the eibach springs i had tha knock sound that came from the front passenger side. For whatever reason lowering the car got rid of that knock, not telling you to drop your car...just something else(strut) to look into

I've read about the isolator on the strut that people had problems with. I figured if that was the problem, I'd hear the noise everytime I hit a bump which is not the case.
