Passenger airbag

I've been noticing my passenger side airbag indicator acting wierd. Really the question I'm wanting the answer to is, what is the actual weight requirement to activate and deactivate the airbag. I have a 11 year old daughter who weighs roughly 70 lbs. When she is in the seat the airbag light will illuminate (indicating that the airbag is off). But while driving around the light will randomly turn off and on. I'm wondering if maybe its her shifting her weight around or if its a faulty sensor somewhere. Nearest Nissan dealership is 45 min away so I kind of want to get a little insight to the issue before wasting a trip. Thanks in advance.

When she's in the seat does it say off? I'm alittle confused by your post saying on and off, it either says off or the light goes out indicating its activates

I had the same problem but with my wife that weighs more than your daugther and the dealership in Canada at that time were confused.
What they told me was that the sensirs are in odd positions and based on the way she is shifting her weight that might happen.
I just let it go and now it does not do it.
What I think is that since the foam is new or harder and they are not heavy enough to trigger the sensors the light comes on.
Maybe if you go to the dealer they might have an update for the software and fix it.
When she is in the seat just have her move from side to side and see if the light goes off after that.
This is a really dumb issue to have on a car of this caliber, besides being a very bad safety issue.

It's not a dumb, or very bad issue. It's a safety feature on top of another safety feature in your car to protect children or small adults. This is just not a Nissan feature, as this requirement is installed in every new car sold in the U.S. since 9/1/2006.

I had/have this happen to me as well. When someone sits in the seat, it works the way its supposed to. When the seat has no one sitting in it, the light goes on and off whenever it wants. I am not going to bother getting it fixed. If you do, please let us know the results.

well took in my max today for a wheel bearing issue and had them check the airbag issue as well. they informed me that weight limit to turn the airbag on is 80 lbs. seeing as my daughter is 100 lbs she's basically at the limit. her shifting her weight around or maybe hitting bumps in the road is enough to trip the sensor and cause the airbag to turn off and on.

and just to touch on my wheel bearing issue in case anyone else experiences this. my car has 23k miles. i do a lot of highway driving. from what I've seen on here it seems to be an issue with our gen maxima. they replaced the drivers side front bearing.

one last question. does anyone know a way to get rid of the wet/damp smell that comes from the ac when first turned on?

I had the same questions when I first got the car. The passenger airbag is very sensitive to both weight and seating position of the passenger. Any change in position will affect if the airbag will be on or not. This also accounts for the side and seat airbags, not just the front dash.

For wheel bearing issues, I haven’t had an issue so far – 11,500 miles on a 2014. This is a long shot but make sure the wheel is torqued to spec, and the tire pressures are properly adjusted to account for load and high speed driving (read: highways). If you travel regularly on the highway, adjust your tire pressures +1 to +2 above recommended. See here: http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tirete....jsp?techid=72

The smell from your A/C is caused from mildew and condensation build-up. The number one reason of this cause is because the A/C is run in “recycle air” mode. You want to make sure it is run on “fresh air” mode to prevent mildew/mold from building up. This is going to happen regardless if you live in a humid environment, I live in Houston so I had this issue when summer began this year. I also recommend changing the cabin air filter after completing this to prevent any lingering smells from returning.

If you bring it into the dealer to have them fix this, they will charge you $100+ to do something you can do on your own. See here:
