MPG Questions

I just added a 2012 SV to my household, CARMAX and still under the 5 day return policy. I reset the avg MPG and MPH and after about 100 mixed miles seem to be getting really wacky numbers, like 12.0 MPG and 11 MPH. I checked and am sure that I am not in metric units etc. I don't know if the onboard computer is screwy or if there is a minimum mileage that is required for accurate calculations. Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Reset it on the highway and wait a few minutes you should start to see an updated readout. If you still see 12mpg I would then top off the tank and hand calculate your mpg to see if the dash is acting up.

For reference I get around 24 mpg mixed driving. Edit: I just looked and show 23.2 mpg mixed.

Metric, but you can convert: I get 13 L /100 kilometres in the city, 8 L /100 kilometers highway. I have a very short commute in the city to work, so the car never really warms up.

Likewise, I also get 22-24 mixed. At 70mph on highway do a reset and you should see high 20's to low 30mpgs.

That 12 MPG is actually 12 litres/ 100 KM so it's good. Just highway doing speed limits I am getting 7 to 8 and in town without racing from stop light to stop light I get 11 to 12. When I drive aggressive I get 13. I owned the car for 2 years now and I get this all the time. You can get online a converter and see what the numbers mean in MPG.

Thanks all for the thoughts and replies. After a few days of mixed driving the MPG is up to 21-22. I am guessing that resetting it while in the driveway caused it to take a little while to catch up so to speak with the real MPG. Kind of odd though, the MPG displayed in the middle of the dash in the "entertainment center" is slightly different then the smaller display in the the instrument cluster. Both are in the 20s, just not the same exact number. I would have thought the source data for both would be the same so the calculated MPG would be the same as well.

Thanks again,

Probably reset at different times.

My middle dash mpg is always 0.2 mpg higher than the instrument cluster. Reset at the same time every time when I fill up.

Man- you have to tell me what you are doing! Had mine for 4 years and never saw anything above 25mpg and that's was a test 60 mile trip really baby and feathering throttle on hills and descents in the highway not going over 65.

What is a Eco tire?

Tires make a huge difference. I just removed my 20" wheels with cheap Delinte D7s and now am running the factory 18" with BFG Comp 2 A/S and have lost .5 MPG. Having said that, the BFGs are miles better a tire than the Delinte D7s.

These are the tires I got:
TIRES

"PureContact with EcoPlus Technology

Size: 245/45R18
LRR: EcoPlus
Sidewall Style: Blackwall
Load Range: XL
Serv. Desc: 100V"

I initially changed the front two tires and thats when I noticed the MPG increase. Once I got 4 new tires the increase was the same. So change your front tires mainly for the increase. The main reason I got these tires was for the comfort. So the mpg bump was a pleasant surprise. City mpg's are the same. Although I admit I haven't been paying attention to fractional increases.

I get 23.5 consistently.
The computer is .9 mpg optimistic. So realistically, I'm getting 22.6 average for mixed driving.
