The only charging system issue I can really think of is that the OEM batteries are a little undersized in my opinion. The factory batteries usually last 2-3 years. Perhaps the charging system checks on the history reports are due to that since most people likely expect a car battery to last longer than that. Once I have replaced the OEM batteries with something in the 640-680 CCA range, no more issues. Hope that helps.

In my 4 year experience working as a Nissan technician, I have only seen 1 Maxima need an alternator but that is it. Usually they go because the oil dipstick may not be inserted all the way and the oil comes out from the dipstick tube and onto the alternator causing it to fail prematurely. Other than that I've hardly ever seen these Maxima's need anything besides routine maintenance. These are really solid cars.

09 SV sports package, 75k miles, have it for 8 years
major issues: telescopic steering wheel broke - replaced under warranty, but took a week - parts needed to arrive, etc.
minor issues: battery changes x4 (one was clearly defective)
recent: recall to fix issues with steering wheel, make sure it is done
if you were considering other non-mechanical stuff, this car has broad shoulders... double check the paint in the bumpers, susceptible to minor scratches and dents. Also, paint is not perfect - front bumper is a magnet to road debris and rock chips
hope this helps
