I have a 2013 Maxima 3.5SV with the tech package with about 55000 kms on it. Ever since we've bought it new, we've been averaging only about 5-6 kmpl(less than 13mpg) on combined city and highway driving. I don't believe this is a case of bad driving habits because I get above average fuel economy on others cars. And the servicing has always been done by our Nissan dealership, which honestly we're not that happy with considering the ridiculous annual maintenance costs, Having said that, it's an absolute pleasure to drive, but these economy numbers keep bothering me. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Let us keep it real, the Maxima is a gas guzzler, it has horrible mileage.

 

I was getting around 19 mpg, mostly suburban driving so 13 does seem on the low end of the spectrum. Just to be certain, I would not rely on the cars computer to calculate mpg. Do it the old fashioned way, gallons at the pump and miles via the trip counter.

 

I guess that's the price to pay

 

Something else is going on, as that is terrible mileage compared to what you should get. My 09 SV sport gets 21-22 in city and 29-30 highway.

 

I wish I got that MPG Rich, I get 18-20 avg w 60%(+) hwy.... This car is a sucker on gas. Between the big tank, premium gas and extreme engine braking.. and all the newer cars (even the CAMRY) are FASTER then Cole (his name) so I'm slowly debating my Nissan over something quicker more efficient with lesser running costs. I love my Maxima but many cars have gotten a ton better putting the newest maxima in the back seat. Nissan has to re-distinguish the maxima....

 

I ran two tanks in a row with some Techron in it, switched to Exxon and that seemed to get me back to 24mpg. I was getting fuel mileage in the high teens for a while using Shell 93 98% of the time.

 

I used to get that, then had an inexplicable MPG drop around 50K. The car does ~16 around town and about ~24 on the freeway steady-state at 65 MPH. This is with Costco 93. What gas do you use?

 

I use Chevron 91 octane.

 

put in a can of CataClean in the tank to clean the O2 sensors and converters and some Top tier quality gas too

 

BK-44 is another excellent fuel system cleaner, get it off Amazon.

 

So the mileage problem is as easy as use of Fuel system cleaner

 

It could be, it sure couldn't hurt.

 

Before putting money in chemicals, I recommend buying a basic scan tool that can read live data. This can be done for about $15 if you buy an obd2 dongle online and download an app for your phone. You want to see what your long term and short term fuel trims are at. +/- 10% is considered normal and 0 is perfect. This is where you start to see if the car is running lean or rich .+ Numbers mean the car is running leaner than expected and the computer is adding that % of additional fuel to keep the mixture ideal and - numbers indicate a rich condition where the computer is pulling fuel.

Adding the short and long term numbers together gives you your total trim.

 

Lol... I average 24 in town in my 14... Gas Guzzler? lol....
