Noob question, checking fluids.

Hello,
New to the 7th gen. I have a 2009 Maxima. Someone please correct me if I am wrong, how does Nissan think you can check and add coolant when the black plastic guard is in place on top of the coolant reservoir? I know how to remove it but what did they have in mind when they designed it that way? even the manual shows a "naked" engine bay.
Bonus question, do you guys keep these black pieces or remove them?
Thanks

It's all about getting customers into the dealership...same reason for manufacturers deleting transmission dipsticks and putting plastic panels all over the underbody. I keep mine on, it's not hard to remove and keeps the bay looking alot cleaner. I also like the idea of some coverage for electronics when I hose out the engine bay.
