Car not starting/barely starting.

Hi all, having some engine issues. Drove it earlier without issue so I haven’t really had in indication that something is failing until I just tried to start it now. It’s cranking and trying to turn over and a couple times it did but then it was just a low rumble and and shut off. Almost like it is out of gas. If I could get it to start just that little bit does it point more towards injectors or a pump, or could be either? Or something entirely different. Mines a 2011 so it’s older. Has anyone else dealt with something similar and have any insight on what i can check/test?

Start with the simple stuff, change the battery. All sorts of gremlins pop up on these cars with a less than perfectly performing battery. Even if it tests good, more than likely the car sees its not. Make sure you get a battery with at least 700 CCA. The original battery only has around 550 and didnt last very long.

And after you are done checking your battery consider that it may be the starter causing your starting problems. Starters don't always just give out totally sometimes they just get weak and have a hard time starting a vehicle.

Thanks for the replies. I assumed it wasn’t either of those since I tried to jump it and got the same result. Could a bad battery still cause this even with a jump? I’d be more than happy to try that if that could be the case. And I didn’t think it was the starter either due to getting it to start a couple times. Albeit barely running at all. Couldn’t even rev it up.

Once you get it started I would expect the engine to operate normally. If it does not then your problem is probably not the starter.

Agreed. And yesterday when it started, it was like barely running. I ran out in the wife’s car last night to grab an OBD scanner just Incase I was I could pull a code. Then plugged it in this morning. No codes. So I tried to start and it fired right up? Even more puzzling. I’ve started a few more times today without issue. Little nervous to take it anywhere though. Pretty damn confused at this point. Crappy gas maybe? Think it’s worth running some injector cleaner next fill up?

Can't hurt. Unfortunately sometimes a problem has to get worse or fail completely before you can determine the source. Check the battery and the terminal connections. If the vehicle is not getting a good 12 volt DC from the battery it can cause it to start and run flaky. I agree with the other poster try the easy stuff first. Consider getting a new battery if it does not fix your problem just return it.

Test your alternator, It could be that it isn't putting out enough charge. If all comes back good with the battery and alternator another thing to check for is the fuel pump, next time you have trouble starting the car see if your fuel pump is coming on, you can do this by simply pushing your start button to the on position "DO NOT PRESS THE BRAKE AND START THE CAR" but listen to hear if the fuel pump turns on. You'll hear a sound coming from the rear of the vehicle, if that doesn't make a sound you may have a faulty fuel pump..
