Melted roof trim rubber (with pics)

Hi everyone,
I'm new to this forum, so this is my first post here.
Wanted to share my recent mini project on my 2014 max (premium).
I just bought my max and I'm second owner. The car has 50,000 mi.
I don't know what the previous owner did or what he used for washing the car, but when I bought it the rubber trim on the glass roof was like this:

The rubber was very sticky - much like the butyl used to seal headlights..
After a short investigation I realized you can't replace only the rubber - it is connected to the black plastic trim...
Searched ebay to order the complete trim but to no avail.
Here in Israel they cost 1,100$ each side!!!
So I decided to preform a transplant surjery with a D shape rubber strip I bought from amazon:

I removed the dried/melted rubber and cleaned as much as i could...
After that I glued the D strip (wich had to be modified to accommodate the roof sliding mechanism) in place.
This is the result:

Total cost 25$ and for that price I'm happy with it.
Did any of you had the same problem?
Thanks for reading!
Great forum!

Same same

So I have the same problem(pics). I've tried and tried to find a replacement but no luck.. finally I ended up getting a set from a junkyard from Maryland. But when I received it, the weatherstripping was too stretched out this useless.. which D Shape seal did you use and what was the monitor had to do to have it fit. ??

I've heard of Flex Seal. I'm curious to know how it works as well for my trim. I also need to figure out what kind of lubricant to use for the panoramic roof. It makes a loud screeching noise when I close it. Do ya'll think it's just a type of grease to apply to the wheels?

This is good, Sil-Glyde Silicone Lubricant, or white lithium grease. Both are available at auto parts stores. There are UTube videos on how to clean and lubricate sun roofs.

So the flex seal worked pretty well so far no leaks.. and it rain nonstop for 2 days here. Just remember to tape the edges really neat and peel the tape towards the seal as soon as possible.. but overall its good. Ill post pics soon.

I woke up this morning and found that because of the excessive heat this summer the molding around my roof is starting to deteriorate. I went to 2 different dealerships and my mechanic and I was told that all they could do was replace the trim. $$$$$$$. I went to autozone and picked up some J B plastic bonder. I will let you know how it turned out.

So the J B plastic bonder worked well. It coated the trim and now its a solid piece. My only regret is that I applied it with the stick applicator and not a small paint brush. I think if I had painted it on instead I would have been able to get a thin layer. Over all its not too bad. Definitely better than the dealer replacing part at their price. It does not look to bad. I can live with it until I have to replace. I will upload pic tomorrow.

I have to repaint the fix. I initially used a black marker that left a really weird copper brown hue when you looked at an angle. I repainted it with non gloss model paint and its looking alot better. I will apply 1 more coat.

I'm having the same issue. Which glue did you use to glue down the D strip?

This works well. I would use a small model making paint brush to brush the glue on. I used a small popsicle type application stick and mine did not come out smooth. You don’t need alot of the glue because when it dries it become very stiff. The difficult part would be shaping and smoothing it out. Shape the trim with your finger put ice on it to cool it down so it wont be so easily molded. Then paint a small layer or the glue. After it dries add more until its how u want it. Black model glue matches the trim paint. If I develop more trim issues this is how I would do it. Like I said the first time I used a stick and it was lumpy. But overall satisfied with how durable it is. I can live with it until I have to do a complete replacement of the room trim.

Glue

Repaired trim

The melted trim.
