Just curious as to how many of us out there have had a failed cvt? I have a 2010 maxima that failed at 66, at 149 now and still going strong. Post year, mileage cvt failed at and mileage now.

Mine died at 106K on 2010 Maxima. Was literally 3 weeks from being out of the extended 120K/10 year warranty. Remanufactured one installed then under warranty. Now at 115K and I have to occasionally feather it as it wants to judder every now and then. Owned Nissan/Infiniti automobiles for over 30 years. My first was a 1991 Maxima with a 5-speed. Ran it for 245K miles on original tranny/clutch. Never had an issue with 5 subsequent cars until these later generation CVTs. Had a 2015 Pathfinder with same tranny. That one crapped out at 41K. Had it replaced under warranty, then the transfer case went at 42K. Had that replaced, then dumped that POS and bought a Lexus RX350. When the Maxima craps out, I'll go with another Lexus for replacement. Will never have another Nissan. The quality of their products just isn't there for me anymore. Shame as they make such great looking automobiles.

No responses

Since only one person responded I am going to assume no one else has had issues and Nissan makes one heck of a reliable cvt!

Here in Israel we have only 2014-2015 maximas and nissan dealers didn't know about any CVT problems in the models they sold here.

so as i get close to 500k, i guess I will get serious about looking. My bride doesnt understand why I havent already gotten a new car. I tell her it is kinda like why I havent gotten a new wife....she fullfills my needs!! I couldnt really tell if she liked that answer or not but I did have a bottle of Warsteiner waiting for me at dinner that night!

My 07 is solid @ 160k. I am in Canada, so a very cold environment. However, I am militant about oil, cvt fluid, and coolant service.

I'm in the same boat, car is nice enough and paid for and at 143K mikes. I drive a lot and its a great highway car and won't embarrass itself in the twisties. Part of me wants to go to nisformance and get the manual and get rid of the cvt for good. Or go Q50 3.7.

Mine went out at 210000. I think it had something to do with me driving home with the car overheating. I took it on the parkway after getting the radiator fixed and when it got to 65+, sometimes I'll step on the gas and didn't get any response. The rpms would go up on their own when going 65+. Now, I got a remanufactured and no issues yet....

Am at 254k, 2011 and the dreaded P1778 is here.
Not hard on the big toe to pedal, changed fluid every 30k. Code appears once a weak, and the lag in pedal shows almost daily.

was about to pull trigger on a 2018 w 60k miles, but, moving to a 2022 Camry.

yup, the maxima esthetic, but can’t do another one.

DIY services… plugs, struts, fluids, mounts … short of dropping engine and Tran. Thanks to YouTube.

interested YouTube link. Stealership doesn’t sell this part. Check out link to the P1778

I had read, somewhere, that the 2014-15 Maximas had an "updated" cvt. I have not seen anything technical to validate that though.
Since I have a 2014, I am curious if that is true, or not.
Can anyone confirm, one way or the other?

If anything it's rumored that 09 transmissions are the most durable and the late 7th gen have the weakest ones.

Yes if you live in a hot climate and do a lot of stop and go traffic.

I assume you mean an additional cooler (other tham the stock cooler?) No, mine is stock. However, recall that eventhough I live in Florida, my baby has long legs and has been primarily been on the highway. I do have daily stop and go for 30 mins of my daily commute the other hour is highway. If all my driving was in the city, i might have considered adding a bigger cooler.
