Subwoofer levels

I just installed a Boss head unit. It has subwoofer filter and subwoofer levels. I have the internal amp off, sub filter off, and sub levels at 1. It goes from 1 to 13. When tuning I'm having to turn my gain way up compared to where it was with the factory unit. I thought I needed a line driver, bought one already, but now I'm thinking it's because the sub levels are turned down. I read sub levels effect voltage output to the amp which would explain my problem with the gain. Should I set the sub levels in the middle, say 6, and tune the set-up again ? Also should I mess with the sub filter? I've never tuned with an aftermarket head unit. Have no idea what these settings mean or do. Appreciate any advice. Merry Christmas!!

Yes, set the sub level at the head unit as high as it will go before clipping, then move down the line with gains. Any level or volume **** adjusts low-level signal voltage out to the next component

Starting with all head unit levels down and amp remote bass **** at max, I would use this path:

Set head unit volume to clip>with volume at max, increase head unit sub level limit to clip>with full input level to EQ, increase sub level on EQ to clip>with full input level from EQ into amp, set gain on amp to clip. Done.
