2016 Maxima official release photos
Am I the only one who thinks most of these pics are strategically leaked by Nissan? They are made to look "guerrilla" in style and substance, but in fact are premeditated.
I think that explains all the teaser shots which show only portions of the car, whereas an enthusiast would show the whole car.
CVT still sucks.

George,
Yes, unless Nissan has something up their sleeve, per Bruddahman, doesn't make sense to drop the VQ37VHR into the 2016 Maxima (obvious dream-scenario if that were the case), so VQ35DE will be here to stay.
LOTH,
Once again, excellent reasoning and explanation about the curb weight difference. Mazda 6 is not same class a Maxima, you referenced the correct class the 6 belongs in.
George,
Maxima, especially with the 8th gen to resemble physical dimensions of the 6th gen should be compared appropriately straight-up against Toyota Avalon, Ford Fusion, & Chevrolet Malibu.
Avalon Dims (w/ 3.5 L V6 FWD): 195.4", 3,594 lbs curb weight
Fusion Dims (w/ 3.5 Duratec V6 AWD): 191.7", 3,427 lbs curb weight
Malibu Dims (w/3.0 V6 FWD): 191.5", 3,660 lbs curb weight
Current 7th Gen Dims (w/ VQ35DE): 190.6", 3,565 lbs curb weight
Nissan may be able to shave some weight off the frame even with accompanying a longer overall unibody, remains to be seen. These cars are compared as full-size sedans due to the engine size; comparing Altima, Camry, Accord, and Mazda 6 wouldn't make sense against Maxima due to the VQ35DE only being offered in Maxima, while the other models carry 4-cylinder base-models.

The added tech will not add even 50 pounds. Solid state automotive electronics have very little weight.
And the VW Beetle and Jetta also weigh less than the Maxima, in case anyone is wondering. I can't imagine why they would. Neither can I understand why the Maxima weight is being compared to the Mazda 6. The Mazda 6 is a very nice vehicle. My daughter has a 2015 Mazda 6 with manual tranny and loves it. But the Mazda 6 is in the Camry/Accord/Altima class, and has over 100 HP less than the Maxima. Apples and oranges.

But GM has really improved the Buick, and I consider the redesigned Regal to be a very nice and RELIABLE automobile. There was a time I hesitated to use the word reliable with almost any GM product.
ps - To tie this to the current discussion, in some ways, the Regal may not be quite as close to the Maxima as the LaCrosse, but, with engine power being an important comparison factor, the Maxima and Regal are very close.

I was one who was not sure that GM was making a wise decision dropping the Pontiac and Oldsmobile (having owned several of each during the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s), and keeping the Buick. Especially since I felt the Buick was sort of a 'senior-oriented' vehicle fairly close to the 'senior-oriented' Cadillac.

What I didn't realize is the information posted in the comparison below based on the 7th gen would turn out the way that it did. While not fair from a MPG standpoint because the V6 difference, the other spec similarities in the link below are interesting.

Not Your Father's Buick
I'm not sure Buick's 6-speed manual FWD model GS offering will fare well from GM a profitability standpoint, but it looks like they are spinning up a performance "Grand National" halo car to bring people into the showrooms.
I thought I was seeing things when I bumped into the following pictures.
How will a 6-speed Buick muscle car hold its resale value? I guess the answer rests with past Grand Nationals and other FWD 6-speeds on the used market today. Honestly I have no idea. This brings back memories of 1966 Wildcats though.
Could they be serious about bringing a car like this to market?

I lost interest in GM some years ago. I don't think I will be back.

I hope you are wrong. The Regal is a nice car but it is small and could use an extra 75 horses.
Pretty sure that Grand National thing is something someone outside of GM cooked up and it's in no way official. It's about as official as those car renderings that some random Joe at home with Photoshop throws together in 20 minutes.

I'll be there sometime.
Also heard Infiniti will reveal a new QX50 at the same show.

All Nissan did was bring the Chinese market QX50L here to the US (just as they brought the long wheelbase Q70L to the states) and drop a letter off the nameplate. Not sure why LLN billed this one as "next-gen" as there's nothing "next-gen" about this vehicle at all, just a refresh.
Received this email today on the new Maxima:
"The 4-Door Sports Car® is back in a big, bold way. Meet the all-new Nissan Maxima. With its dramatic, jet-fighter-inspired styling and new design elements like the V-motion front end and unique "floating" roof appearance, this Maxima is an eyebrow-raising, pulse-pounding thrill ride.
Buckle up and get ready to take flight this summer. Get updates and you'll be one of the first to learn more after Maxima debuts April 2 at the New York International Auto Show. There's much more excitement to come."

i know the 2 i have seen here, close to Nissan HQ, had black wheels and the badges taped off. i saw a deep red and and black one. i am actually surprised i have seen so few. before the previous generation max came out, i saw them everyday near the Smyrna factory with taped over badges. its big and looks good, imo. it is much more (old) M size than altima size that my 2013 is...

$50 on another Altima SE-R model
The only way you get any Nissan with over 400 HP is to buy a GTR or QX70 (under the Infiniti badge), you can go to damn near any other automaker and get cars with that amount and more but only two cars in the entire Nissan family.
The 2016 Maxima
Just saw this hit my email, sigh the half height windows made it apparently into production. Still, have to look at the new Maxima in person.

Any word on the return of power folding mirrors? I really miss that feature due to a 90 degree turn into my garage. Made the mistake when we remodeled our home of putting in a door for each bay rather than one large door. It makes that turn really tight. Found out the hard way resulting in a $500+ repair.

I also noticed that Nissan is placing the official 'unveiling' as April 2nd. What they do not mention is that, although the show is not open to the public until April 2nd, press photographers are allowed in on April 1st, and that will result in photos of the Maxima beginning to appear in many publications.
This is a long show, lasting until April 12th. There will be many new vehicles unveiled. Here is a schedule for days in which the public is allowed inside:

A short, yet unscientific review of the Atlanta Auto Show
Just got back from the Atlanta auto show.
Verdict...Blecch. Gets weaker by the year.
Several manufacturers didn't bother showing, i.e. Jaguar, Volvo....
LOTH, you were wise not to bother. When I brought up the Max, Nissan reps acted like roaches scattering when the light in a rent controlled apartment in Brooklyn was turned on. Didn't want to engage at all.
Not a GT-R to be found either.
Infiniti didn't show too well either. A lot of long in the tooth models.
What also torqued my wrench was how few companies decided to power their cars. It absolutely amazes me how they expect you to evaluate their cars (albeit statically) without letting you try out the console head unit and IP.
Just ridiculous.
The Buick Lacrosse's first impression was painful as part of the process to enter the car is to bang your knee against a dashboard protrusion. An amazing oversight.
The Caddie ATS was nice, except it helps if you bring some anterior padding since they copied the Germans in the seat department.
I was favorably impressed with the Hyundai Genesis and the Kia Credenza, though I lean towards the Genesis slightly for the interior appointments. I didn't know this, but the Azera still lives! It's essentially a 6 cyl (293hp) version of the Sonata, though the interior is more previous generation Sonata-like. The Genesis bumps up the 3.8L to 311 hp.
Toyota, Mazda and Honda did not impress. I guess it's bad luck to be a Japanese car company where the last letter in the name is an 'a'.
I was able to try out the Lexus console UI. Horrible! Very easy to miss the icon you're aiming for, and that's standing still! The GS display though was really good. 12"!
After sitting in many cars, the new Murano was impressive. Bright displays and a comfortable cockpit. It was a gray interior, so the plastic accent looked better to me than the beige version. If the Max's IP and console HU are the same, I'll be happy with it, though they too did not enable all of the features.

PR Manager for Nissan. Nashville native Josh Clifton
It’s an important year for Nissan too, with the arrival of the all-new 2016 Nissan Maxima which, according to Josh Clifton, is “dramatically styled” and “looks like nothing else on the road today”. Josh continues: “It drives like nothing else in the segment. Its defining presence comes from its Nissan signature design elements – including its dramatic lighting features, V-Motion front end, deeply sculptured fenders and unique “floating” roof treatment. Add in a driver-centric interior, advanced safety and connectivity technology and a refined 300-horsepower V6 engine and Maxima sets a new standard for style, performance and technology in the midsize sedan segment.”

Thanks, a-b-c. We can't be sure whether that person was 'generalizing' about the 300 HP, with the actual number being slightly higher, or whether he was being exact, and 300 is the actual number. Either way, I'm good. I just wanted to see at least 300, which is more than adequate for most styles of driving, especially on a FWD vehicle.
Now we need to see what he means by 'drives like nothing else in the segment.'

Not sure why that's so surprising, and it's been pretty much confirmed up to this point. Not sure why you find it so hard to believe.
And an off topic observation: the spam bot filter for posting replies on this forum is really annoying.

I don't get how they are going to compete in Canada
