2016 Maxiam correct fuel grade?

I have put fuel in 3 times topping off mostly . There is no premium or grade level
By the Gas filler cap or anywhere in the information screen at dash. However I looked up in the electronic owners manual and it says 91 octane recommend and not 85 and at least 89 grade. In ILL gas is at $3.00 plus for regular and $3.39 for mid and $4. Plus for Premium. What should I run? I thought new efficient engine would run on Standard 89 octane? I would prefer fuel efficiency with some performance at certain times.

It's up to you...it requires 87 octane or higher...but is calibrated to run at least 91 octane for optimum performance and efficiency. I never put anything less than 91 in my previous 2 Maximas and will do the same in the future unless I was in a pinch. You spend this kind of money for such a nice and sporty looking car...I would give it the best you can afford at all times.

This is what the Owners Manual actually says:

FUEL RECOMMENDATION
NISSAN recommends the use of unleaded premium
gasoline with an octane rating of at least
91 AKI (Anti-Knock Index) number (Research
octane number 96). If unleaded premium gasoline
is not available, you may use unleaded regular
gasoline with an octane rating of at least 87 AKI
number (Research octane number 91), but you
may notice a decrease in performance.

Nissan has the fuel system aimed at 91 octane.

But

I have owned every Maxima gen from 2nd to 7th (two of some), and they all ran equally well on 89, 91 and 93 octane. All three octanes will give the same MPG (which is not tied directly to octane), but maximum acceleration when measured electronically will give a very slight edge to 91 and 93 octane, but not a difference we could detect by the 'seat of our pants.'

Several here are 'doing fine' with regular (87 octane). But 87 octane is far enough from the target 91 octane that both performance and fuel efficiency could suffer, as that is gettting a little far from the range this engine is intended to run on. Several owners of 5th, 6th and 7th gens have posted here over the years that their engines actually 'stumbled' at times on 87 octane, and even sometimes 'pinged' under acceleration on hills. But some here have been happy with 87, as they do not often use the full power of their engine.

You should use what Nissan recommends, 91.

Yeah Light is correct, 87 oct is not a gen 5 to 7 friend (8 either). With the high compression ratios of over 10.** they tend to ping with it...
