In Cabin Air Filter?

Hey has anyone changed their in cabin air filter yet? I'm approaching 10k miles and mine is beginning to smell funky. I haven't looked into where it is yet. If you have replaced yours, was it pretty simple? I know it's usually behind the glove box or in the passenger footwell. Also, did you stick with the OEM filter or change to the third party? I searched the site and came up empty. Any info would be fabulous!

It is located in the passenger footwell, left side. You need to remove a trim piece of the center console. The housing is up near the firewall. I didn't put any effort into opening the housing or pulling the filter out just yet as I only have 3K on the car. I just wanted to see where it was. It would seem to be a PITA in my opinion. The behind the glove box replacements were way too easy, I'm gonna miss that.

I kind of figured it'd be there. It was on my 2010. I just wonder if there are any aftermarket filters even available. I think I'll swing by Advanced Autoparts on my way home tonight. Thanks for the reply.

Did you get in-cabin filter replaced on your 2016? I ordered a filter from Auto Zone and hope to get it done today. Any tips on how to do it?

Its a pain in the *** to do.
I don't bend like I used to.
The trick is pinching the filter into a bowtie shape and slipping it in.
Getting it out just tug and pull.
At 15k my filter was kinda dirty...
Could have probably let it go till 30 when it would have been filthy.
I honestly may have the dealer do it next time, although if it wasn't 100 degrees out, I may not have gotten as aggravated.

Wow, what a PTA! Attempted to replace yesterday, aborted due to lack of time, will try tomorrow.
16sjmax - was no prob getting the pax foot well trim piece off, nor the filter cover - but the filter didn't want to slide out. Did you pretty much rip it out? Seems to catch on a wire bundle or something up high - maybe one hand to move it out of the way, another to pull? Looks like will have to make a platform to lay on outside the vehicle and lay upside down in the foot well (I'm not a contortionist).
In getting the new one in, you pinched it vertically?
Thanks

Yes - pinch in the middle vertically (with the folds horizontal) - that will bring the outside ends in and down, making it easier to slide in to the slot.

The video is for 7th gen, but I'm pretty sure location and removal/installation are the same for 8th gen.

Wow, I didn't realize that this was such a PITA to change in the Maxima. I'll have to take a look under there and see if this is something I'll be able to tackle. I know the local Hyundai and Honda dealers charge $50-$80 to change theirs, and those are a simple five minute job so I'm assuming the Nissan dealer will at least be similarly expensive.

Be forceful in getting the old one out, it will not be reusable in any case.
gizzsdad is right. Pinch it in the middle to make it look like a bowtie.
It wiggles in easy in that way.

Just replace mine this morning. Took about 15 minutes for me to flatten the passenger seat and slide my body into position. Removal was actually the easy part. Getting the replacement filter was a pain. Far end kept bunching up despite pinching. You would think after so many generations, Nissan would just redesign the placement.

Thought I'd resurrect this thread since some of the 2016s are getting up there in age. There's been talk on this forum about dealers charging $40 for the filter. That is completely absurd. Here is a link to some 3rd party replacement options.

Here is a link to a video that shows how to replace the filter.
