Creaking sound from driver console?

I picked up my new SR this morning, and soon after driving it off the lot I started noticing a creaking sound from somewhere in the driver console area. The SR rides very stiff (which is what I wanted) but every tiny little judder seems to trigger that sound, which ends up sounding a bit like a geiger counter running in the car.

My assumption is that one of the plastic pieces or accents isn't settled all the way in or is hitting another component, but there's just so many of them. Based on the sound my guess is that it's in the driver console area rather than the central console.

Has anyone encountered this on an 8th gen Maxima? I've read that this used to be an issue on some old Altimas and that it wasn't always possible to get a dealer to diagnose and fix.

Hey I work at Nissan as a tech and just both a 16 maxima myself and just heard the noise to more so over bumps. What it is is the plastic cowl on the windshield making noise it had snowed where I live and what happens is water and salt gets in between and makes it squeak what I did was put felt tape underneath the cowl with our squeek and rattle kit your car is still under warranty take it in and they'll do it for you just let them know it's coming from the cowl area so it's not taking them forever to locate it trust me that's what it is I've fixed this noise on muranos as well.

Thanks for the info - by cowl do you mean the part where the wipers are, or the part where it connects near the roof?

I think that at least some of the sounds are coming from above, the area of th the visor or where the windshield meets the roof.

I also have a slight creaking sound but mine is coming from what appears to be under the steering column or behind the instrument cluster. It is annoying as all and I am usually good about finding squeaks...

Thank you for chiming in here. As a Nissan Tech, we would be very appreciative for any insight you offer on some of the issues that invariably pop up in a new model! I'd love to have a shop manual but I hear the are near 300 bucks so your inside advice is great!

My '16 developed a squeak on cold days recently and it was at the top of the driver's door near the rear edge. It seems like some of the black rubber trim is rubbing. If I pushed on the door frame and it would go away. Also I tucked in the rubber trim in that area and that seemed to help.

So I still have the noise. After trying to move my head the cabin around while driving, it now seems like it's actually coming from above the dash - the sun visor or where the windshield meets the roof. Very strange. Touching the visor doesn't reproduce it. I have an SR so no sunroof

So I was having the same issue, right from the get go. In fact, mine is still at the dealer now for, as you also described it, a Geiger meter sound. The told me the reason this happened, is that on the B pillar of the driver's side, they were a couple loose nuts than needed to be torsion-ed correctly and it was loose just enough to make that annoying sound. They have taken it on several test drives after this repair to make sure it was gone. They even let the car sit and cool (little chilly here today) to make sure it was gone. Hope this helps. If you need to have your dealer call my dealer to determine the exact problem, it's Woodbury Nissan in Woodbury, NJ. Ask for Pete the service advisor. Hope this helps you get rid of that damn noise.

I have a '16 Maxima SR too. It has been noisy since day 1. First there was a clicking noise above the driver side. After several trips to the dealer, the tech diagnosed at the windshield nipples not being properly aligned. He fixed one side, then the other side started clicking. Fixed that and it has been sporadic noise ever since. I only have 2700 miles so far but the new car experience has been ruined. Last week in the cold weather there was a plastic grinding noise (almost like when you have a case of water in the car and the bottles are rubbing against each other). I wonder if it's the cowl? I just made an appointment again. I am going to try and get the foam tape like the NISSAN guy mentioned earlier in the thread

same issue passenger side pillar loose nuts did the trick. I was very difficult to find where noise came from but 3 trips to dealer finally fixed it.

Are these bolts easily accessible? Where are they located?
