Is my passenger airbag broken?

I don't see the light for it changing regardless of someone sitting in the seat. This is with no one in it

I believe that light only goes on if the computer thinks there is a child in the seat. Try putting a bag of potatoes or something less than 50lbs in the seat. The light should come on to notify you that the airbag has been disabled.
Or you can wait a day and I'm sure someone will post a quote from the owners manual.

Go to page 1-49 (status light ) for more information.
However this is what should be going on.
No one in the passenger's seat: The Light is OFF and the front passenger air bag is OFF
and will not inflate in a crash.
Front passenger seat is occupied and the passenger meets the conditons as outlined in this section (related to weight and size of adult) the light is OFF to indicate that the front passenger air bag is operational.

The light should only be on if passenger is a small adult , child , child restraint.

To answer your question looks correct to me.

Thanks so much. Was worried it was a defective sensor. I'm still reading through the manual but must have missed that one.

What throws me off is that the light is not on when the seat is empty. I would have thought it'd indicate the airbag is off even if there isn't a child in the seat to signify it won't deploy during a crash. Strange design.

I think the intent is not to simply tell us whether the airbag is 'on' or 'off', but to alert us if there is a passenger sitting there unprotected.

I suppose the thinking is that if we were usually alone in the car, we would become accustomed to almost always seeing that light on, and so would be less likely to notice
it if we occasionally had a light passenger because we were so accustomed to seeing that light on.
