New Recall - Computer reprogram

Stopped in the dealership to get a trim piece fixed. I was flagged for the occupant sensor air bag problem. He said it just came out this week.

OCS-ECU-ACU REPRO

2016 NISSAN MAXIMA SR

VIN:

EFFECTIVE DATE: May 22, 2016 > Print Summary
Summary
The Occupant Classification System (OCS) is designed to classify the size and weight of the front seat passenger and, under certain conditions, automatically turn OFF the passenger air bag. The OCS system is designed to only deploy the front passenger airbag when the front passenger seat is occupied by an adult. In the affected vehicles, the OCS software may incorrectly classify the passenger seat as empty when it is occupied by an adult. If the OCS does not detect an adult occupant in the passenger seat, the passenger airbag would be deactivated.

Risk
Failure of the passenger airbag to deploy during a crash (where deployment is warranted) could increase the risk of injury to the passenger.

Remedy
The OCS software will be reprogrammed to reduce the potential for classifying the seat as empty. This reprogram will be offered at no charge to the customer and should take less than an hour to complete. Your Nissan dealer may require your vehicle for a longer period of time based upon their work schedule.

Did they take care of the recall while your car was in the shop or do you have to bring it back? I'm just curious if the fix has been made available to dealers yet.

This is the first recall my car has shown up as needing. Are these recalls valid until fixed or do they expire ? Like if I wait a year or two until the car is in the dealership shop for something else, will this still be a free fix ?
Thanks for the heads up.

Not meaning to be sarcastic, but if you are possibly going to wait up to a year or two to get the problem fixed it seems to me that it's not a problem. That being the case why worry about it.

When I need to sell the car I will want to have all the recall stuff taken care of; if it's still free, fine, but if the dealership wants to charge me $200 for something because I waited too long, sad panda.

I would expect that if there was a time limit on the recall the manufacture would be required to notify you in writing otherwise how would you know about the recall in the first place. Rumor mill doesn't cut it.

Recall was announced around April 29, 2016.

The Problem: The front passenger Occupant Classification System may incorrectly classify an adult passenger as a child. Alternatively, the sensors may indicate the passenger seat is empty despite it being occupied. If so, the passenger front airbag may be turned off and not deploy during a crash.

The Fix: Owners will receive notification of the recall within 60 days, followed by a final notification once the remedy is available. Some vehicles will require replacement of the OCS system, while others simply need reprogramming of the OCS and Air Bag Control Unit.
