First oil change!!!
Change anytime up to the recommended interval. Many of us like to get break-in oil out early (I usually do around 1,500), but tens of thousands do just fine waiting until the first recommended change interval.
Sooner is better for piece of mind. My dealership offers free changes, so I go every 3k or sooner. no skin off my wallet.
But outside of that, when you start getting up in miles, 3000-5000 pull the dipstick occasionally, you can see and smell it. If it smells more like fuel then oil I'd change it early, dark doesn't always mean it's broken down, but the darker it is the more deposits are in there. And the point about duration is important, say you only have 2000 miles on it, but haven't changed in 6 months...there's a breakdown process of the used oil just in the case that it will start to go bad despite low mileage.

I took mine in at 3,000 miles, and was discussing the situation with my favorite Nissan tech. He and the Service Manager both said Nissan stopped using 'breakin' oil several years ago because the much finer clearances and engine-building technology of today no longer puts the tiny particles of metal, etc, into the oil. They said the oil put in by the factory is regular engine oil, good for 5K miles unless we are using the car as a desert racer. So I had them check to confirm the oil was clean, then closed the hood and took it back at 5K for my first change.
If I lived where the climate can be brutally cold for several months of the year, or did most of my driving in city traffic, or was not putting many miles on the car for months at a time, I might still change at the old 3750 mark, as starting an engine regularly in very cold weather or doing lots of driving in city traffic puts any oil to the test.
Just pull the dipstick occasionally and see if the oil looks and smells good.
