Latest Map Version for Nav

Hi,

I just picked up a 2017 Maxima SR last night and noticed that the latest version of maps that they loaded is years 14-15. I'm surprised for a 2017 that the maps are that old. When I originally test drove it, there was no SD Card. I just want to make sure they didn't give me an old SD card that was just laying around.

Does everyone else have years 14-15 maps in the 2017's ?

The maps in the 2016 Maximas were also out-of-date, which has been a bone of contention here on maxima.org during the past 18 months. What makes this worse is that the actual data on the SD card is not even up to date to the year the version supposedly represents. There are subdivisions near me that have been around for five years that are not on my 2016 Maxima SD card.

I love my Maxima, but I am disappointed that the maps are nowhere near up-to-date, as I use them almost every time I use the Maxima, and constantly when on out-of-state trips.

Same here. Have a 2017 and just had the whole head unit replaced. They asked me for the map version and I got the same one back from the factory.

I've always wondered why portable GPS units like my TomTom which gives me free map updates for life, four times a year, while the auto industry is for far behind in their update service and so expensive.

I was curious and e-mailed nissan-navi-info@here.com a couple of months ago for their take:

Thank you for contacting Nissan Navigation Center. Your 2017 Nissan Maxima came equipped with the newest maps currently available. At this time, the release date of the next update has not been officially announced. Generally updates are released every 12-18 months.

To check the availability of new map updates for your vehicle, please visit www.nissannavigation.com periodically.
I am not feeling very hopeful for an update this year.

This map situation is an area that is far behind the times. Maps did not need updating very often in bygone days, but there is road construction, road rerouting, and new subdivisions going up all around me, and the maps in my 2016 are worthless for finding anything that has changed in the last four or five years. I obtained a PAPER map from my local Chamber of Commerce, and it was easily more up-to-date and complete than my Maxima maps. It even showed (via broken lines) all roads that have been approved, but that are not yet under construction. A technology that can send men to the moon and back should be capable of much better than what we have in our Maximas. The technology is there, but the effort required to do things right is not.

never counted on my Maxima Nav system. Always using Google maps as it is frequently updated, easy to search for any places or stores and has a very acurate traffic info

Give up on a newer SD card. I nearly bricked two systems with a Nissan-provided update.

They're imbeciles and the system to get new maps is totally farked.

and if you think your 2017 is bad, look up update for 09 maxima, with the stupidest dealer only upgrade system.
Its nearly end of 2016 and the latest map available for my 09 is "2015 version 8.8", while 2014 model (same gen, different headunit)
has 2017 map release.
My take on why updates are rare and far in between is that there is a monopoly in place. You can only get your map update from one place. As any monopoly, they are happy to charge you $150 for obsolete updates and make no effort to keep even remotely up to date with changes.
At the amount they charge for these maps they can have the most up to minute updated maps.
Its the same company providing map data to the most auto manufacturers, used to be called NavTeq and now called HERE.
Truly pathetic, but thankfully for proliferation of smart phones and google allowing saving of maps, you have other options.

maxud is correct about the horrors of updating the maps on the 09 Maxima. I paid $150 for the update, which is sent directly to the dealer, and my dealer, who has always been able to fix anything on my Maximas going back to the 2nd gen 1985, tried four times over two months to get the new maps to load without success. The update package came from NavTeq.

I am a map nut (actually I have collected maps since 1948 and have thousands of them), and would pay $300 for a serious update to my nav maps, but will be paying nothing to nobody because I no longer trust anyone to produce up-to-date maps for my Maxima nav system. I will refrain from expressing my true feelings about this.
