Android Auto

Android Auto
First off, I apologize if this question has been asked already.
Over the weekend, my car had a short while it was parked in the driveway and went into flames. Insurance provided me with a rental car for a week and I'm currently on the hunt for a new car.
The 2017 Nissan Maxima is currently one of the top contenders but I also want to have Android Auto in my next car. I did some reading saying that the 2016 Maxima's can not have Apple Carplay due to hardware issues.
Assuming that the Apple Carplay and Android Auto system requirements are the same, do would believe an upgrade will be available for the 2017 models in the future?
Thank you.

Funny that this thread is posted. I was LITERALLY just talking about this with my brother at lunch 20 mins ago. The pace of technology moves so fast, and we use a hot new device like an iPhone for 2 years then replace it. However, on average we keep our cars for 6 years. It's very odd because auto manufacturers (aside from Tesla) NEVER update their head units. What you get on a new car is all you will ever have. That being said, it is VERY unlikely that Nissan will update the 2017 to Android Auto. I would suspect that they will make it a selling point to entice people to upgrade to the 2018 model. Nissan sees this works for manufacturers like Apple, but hasn't realized that most people don't want to "upgrade" their $40,000 car every 2 years! Here's to hoping that this changes.

OK what I meant was that I don't think there is any update for 2017/2016 Maxima owners for the Android. Given the fact that an existing android phone app will give you most of what you need, you could go for a 17 or pay more for an 18. I'd probably go for the 18 if I liked the built in android integration. Good luck and let us know what you end up doing.

I do not think Nissan will release an update on the older version of Maxima. If you need to have either Android or Apple, the best bet is the replace the head unit with LATEST Maxima unit. I talked with dealer, they said it will be a simple swap, but the cost was around $4,000 OTD, if I can remember.

I own a 2017 Maxima SL. I just had a chat with Nissan and "there are no plans to update 2017 and older models with Android Auto at this time". I also learned that Nissan Connect services aren't available unless you own the Platinum trim...seem kinda crappy to me.

OP, what is your budget for your car replacement? Year end sales are on, the 2019 Maxima is coming out (has come out?) soon, so you may be able to get a 2018 Max for relatively cheap. Android Auto is standard on the 2018s. Again, I guess it depends on your budget.

After watching many threads about Android auto (AA) I was pleased to see it on my 2019 Platinum. I downloaded the application and tried it out. Can't say it impresses me at all and here is my take. So you enable Andoid Auto, and now you are eating into your data plan on your phone if you are not on an inlimited data (I am not). About the only thing useful is WAZE on the larger screen. Otherwise we are delighted with the latest Tom Tom version of the built in navigation system supplemented with the XM traffic, weather, gas prices and use WAZE on the nearly 6 inch phone screen periodically. I just took XM up on an offer of full monthly everything sevices for 10 bucks a month over a 6 month period once my trial expires.
The other thing about Android auto is that is replaces your built in voice commands with theirs. it also requires a cable connection to the car! Once AA is enabled you can't control the built in radio functions and other things. So for now I am happy with my seamless bluetooth connection and the central control our built in system provides. AA is going on the shelf as a needless duplication of what I already have.

I’m not saying that I’m die hard iOS Apple user but I have an iPhone. I used to have android as my personal phone and still use android system as my workplace provided me with one. But I personally never use Apple CarPlay in my car. And I would probably never use Android Auto even if I had android instead of IOS.
I mean apple car car play and android auto is just a gimmick in my view.
Nice interface and that’s about it. Same functions a bit limited but on bigger display.

Why bother with AA? [I still don't].

Thanks to all of you for the feedback. Since the 2019s were changed to the Tom-Tom navigation core, I think the maps look better though it is a real convoluted drill to update with later additions of the map database. So much so I doubt I'd do it. Good point on the Google maps and I think I will side-by-side a desination with both to see what advanages there are. For now, though, I will not let outstanding get in the way of "Very Good" as the key here is a seamless experience with the Navigation system I already have

I personally love AA. I use Waze everyday for my commute. Not only does it reroute me in the event of building traffic, it lets me know where others have seen cops recently. In my past car I didn't have AA and used my phone's display. I had a Galaxy S8 and the Waze map and icons burned into my screen. I also find it convenient to have a larger display of Waze on my headunit. I don't think i'll buy anohter car without AA.
I've also never used the built in navigation on my car. I get everything I need from AA and Waze, plus you have to pay to upgrade the maps every so often. I think that is BS.

To each their own. Just curious, what phone functions are better with the built in system? I may have overlooked some things since I always use AA. I can't really think of anything AA doesn't let me do phone-wise. Thanks.
