Anyone using 0w-20 Pennzoil Ultra Platinum?
Anyone using 0w-20 Pennzoil Ultra Platinum?
I just stocked up on this oil for the next 3 oil changes. This seems to be like unicorn oil. Hard to find and pricey. I know its top notch stuff though as we used it in our last car which was a 2015 Impala V6. I was just curious if anyone else was using it for their Maxima? Just got our 2017 Platinum a few days ago with 16 test drive miles on it. So have a ways to go before the first oil change at 5k.
I did my first oil change on my max with the penzoil platinum 0w20 (not ultra), its a great oil I have used it on my last two v6 altimas as well. They just changed the packaging on their bottles so it was tough to find for awhile. I get it at walmart in New Jerseythe 5 qt jug is about 23 dollars for the platinum 0w20.
My dealership promised me lifetime oil changes as long as I had the car. But the idiots put 5w-20 in it, which I know is not bad, but then they started trying to up-sale me on other services for a car at the time only had 5K on it. Things like time for a new air filter, replace the cabin air filter, 4 wheel alignment time. Did I mention they forgot to put the dipstick in and when they filled it up with oil, it back flowed out of the hole a bit, and made a nice smokey mess for a bit.
I have always done the regular maintenance stuff like this on my own 3 Nissan vehicles with the premium filters, oils, and such. I really don't like being treated like an idiot that knows nothing about his car. But after things like this with no attention to detail by them, I will only see them for warranty related issues.
We also use the non"Ultra" as well. Also when the Pennzoil Synthetic 0w-20 is not on sale, we sometimes find Mobil 1 - Synthetic on sale at Costco. So sometimes I will switch between those.

I did have to add a bit of oil a couple of times prior to my first oil change at 4500 miles. Once I put the penzoil in it hasn't burnt a drop. Not sure what oil the factory uses but I think it's normal to burn a little the first few thousand miles.
Here is what Nissan says in the owners manual page 8-10: It is normal to add some oil between oil maintenance intervals or during the break-in period, depending on the severity of operating conditions.
Because I've owned an '07 Nissan Altima since new and it never used a drop of oil during its break-in period, and now even after 10,000 mi. oil changes using synthetic.
I'm an Amsoil guy. I use their "XL" (extended life) oil, which is their mid-grade. Started using it on my wife's Subaru Outback. Those cars are known to use a little oil like a lot of new cars these days, but the usage instantly dropped to a fraction of what it was on the synthetic oil the dealer used once I started it. It continues to drop to where it almost doesn't use any now. Just did my first change on my Max at 1200 miles, the end of the break-in period. Will change again at 5K and every 5K thereafter. Also used the Fram Ultra Synthetic filter. Amazing how small the filter is on these cars. Looks like it goes on a riding mower.
Honda has a real oil analyzer that reports oil condition and adjusts the oil change mileage accordingly. (no pun intended)

Caveat Emptor: If you use a filter that is not recommended and approved for your particular vehicle, there is no manufacture warranty. In our case, Fram list only the 6607 line of oil filters, meaning if you used the 7317 line, and the filter was defective, you are out of luck. Doom on you. All filter manufactures have this restriction in their warranty.
