16-17YEAR Navigation Maps version vs 2018
16-17YEAR Navigation Maps version vs 2018
I just bought a 2017 Maxima, it comes with the 16-17YEAR (Program Version 109) Navigation Maps (link below), does it make sense to buy the new 2018 version? Thanks

Up to you. But I tend to buy new map updates every 2 years. I don't think its worth it right now as 16-17 are pretty darn recent. My car had come with 14-15 maps but that is another story and I did get Nissan to pay for the update in the end.
There are normally not a great number of changes from year to year with the NAV maps. I personally wait several years between updates. Also be aware that many dealers charge to apply the updates. That can run the total price to well over $150.

I would never buy an SD card for map updates then try the install myself. Too much can go wrong, then you are screwed. Pay the extra dollars, have the dealership get and install the update. If they screw it up it's on their dime to fix it. Don't buy it online and give it to the dealership to install. If something goes wrong with the install they could say it was a bad card. Have the dealership shoulder all the risk on this one. Just my opinion.
On the right side of the CD/DVD-ROM slot there is a cover for the Maps SD Card, I think you just remove the old one and plug the new one, It shouldn’t be more complicated than that, but I might be wrong.
If that is all you have to do is plug in a new card and there is no permanent card to nav system download taking place, then the only thing I would be concerned about is where you get the card from. Anything other than a Nissan dealership you put yourself at risk.

very much on topic for myself as well- my recently purchased 2017 SR has outdated maps- they are the same as in my 2014 I believe...I contacted Nissan Customer Care, and after being bounced about to their "navigation team", I was told I needed to contact my dealer- I've done that by email and phone and have not heard back from them... this may be a rather protracted process. My wife has a Mazda 6, and when she complained about outdated maps, they brought her car in that day and updated the maps...I hope to have this resolved quickly as I'm unhappy with the current situation, although the car is great!

Good luck with that. My dealer told me to get bent and so did Nissan consumer affairs. I had to take it up with Nissan corporate to get it resolved and when I finally did. Things moved FAST! Let me guess you got stuck with 14-15 maps instead of 16-17 maps right? They MIGHT be coming with 17-18 maps now.
Thanks

Nissan reserves the right to change specifications, performance, design or component suppliers without notice and without obligation.
Good luck with your quest.
There is no question that Nissan assembles and sells navi equipped vehicles with outdated nav maps. Sometimes, the nav is two or more years behind.
There is also no question that updating the nav maps/info on Nissan vehicles is more complicated, time consuming and costly than on most vehicles.
I have no shortage of time, patience and money (retired, living comfortably), yet have still had three very bothersome nav update situations with my Maximas during the last eight years. It should not be this way.

I just went on the Nissan website and called their North America corporate number. After leaving a message. Someone from corporate contacted Nissan consumer affairs and told them to get the ball rolling ASAP. Which they did and Nissan refunded my money for the map update.

You are mistaken. I got the updated SD card. It involves exchanging the old card and the new card several times, in order to completely install the new maps, as well as address book, prior destinations, etc. It took me approx. 25 minutes.
So you did have to go to the dealership to do it?
I too updated my nav system on my 2016 Max using SD card order from Nissan, actually from the vendor that supplies Nissan maps. Detailed instructions come with the SD card which is VIN specific. The update process does take about 30 mins and requires several swap outs of the old and new SD cards. The only word of caution I would add is it would probably be better to start the car vs just just using accessory mode, one push of the start button because it times out to save the battery and shuts off. I had to start mine towards the end of the update process and was sure it was going to mess up the update. Luckily it did not.

I did speak with a Nissan customer care representative and the end result seems to be Nissan wants me to pay for the updated SD card, and then submit my invoice for them to "review the possibility of reimbursement"...I've decided to live with the maps as they are and chalk this up to corporate indifference...
