Oil Change Frequency

Hello. I just bought a certified pre-owned 2017 Max from a Nissan dealer. I know the manual says oil changes every 5 years. I have always done 3 years for all my cars forever. You think this is unnecessary with this car? I put on about 12K miles a year. What do you guys do? Thanks, Dave

Yeah, I hope that is a typo of some sort. Years?!?!? O_o

Anyway, to answer your question, change your oil every 5,000 miles.................MILES.

What if I drive 5K miles a year, can I do it once a year?

Yes, my error. I have always changed my oil every 3000 miles but the manual says every 5000 miles is OK. I remember the gold standard used to be every 3000 miles so that's what I have always done. But you think every 5000 miles is OK then, right? Thanks, Dave

Depending on what kind of oil you use. If you uses full synthetic oil, you could go for 5k miles(or more). But most synthetic blend should be change out every 3k miles.

Absolutely! I wish I could keep my miles THAT low. Bought my 2017 in June and I'm about to hit 10K.

I thought you had to change the oíl at 5K or 6 monthts, with my low miles, I can go a full year without changing the oil, I live in MN and during the winter gets very cold, is that OK? Normaly I would try to enter the winter with fresh oil in the engine, thoughts? Thanks

Actually, I would probably do the same thing.

A lot depends on driving conditions, climate, etc, in addition to mileage.

Here in middle Georgia, not using my car for commuting, using regular or synthetic blend, I have no problem going 5K miles (as my dealer suggests). With full synthetic, I have no problem going 7K, even 8K miles between changes.

If I lived where winters were very cold, and was a fairly low mileage driver, I would consider changing oil twice each year - at the start of winter, and at the start of summer.

If I drove regularly on dusty (unpaved) roads or pulled a trailer or was a very aggressive driver, I would probably change oil twice each year, even three times if I was a higher mileage driver.

There are so many different possible situations, in addition to climate variables, we have mileage, driving style, stop-and-go driving, type of oil, road conditions, etc.

Where did you obtain this information? 3K for synthetic blend oil change?

I live where winters can be very cold and I change my oil twice a year, when I get the tyres swapped for the coming season. It's probably overkill but given the climate I don't have a problem with doing it.

I use Fuchs full synthetic oil and do my oil change every 9k-10k KM.
My car just hit the 81k KM this week.

Nissan is a bit behind the times on the interval. Many other brands have gone to 7,500 or even 10,000 miles between changes using full synthetic. Given that Nissan specifies full synthetic for my Maxima, I feel like doing it every 5,000 miles is overkill. I drive a ton of miles so I end up at the dealer for an oil change every 6 weeks or so. Given that I have a maintenance plan, I'll let them change it every 5K as recommended at least until that runs out.

i go 90% at fwy speeds, so i typically go 8k to 10k miles with full synthetic 5w-30.. since it is colder season now, i switched to 0w-20. car still runs pretty good at 68k miles

I can go with the 5,000 oil change interval but I really don't understand the 20,000 mile brake fluid change interval.

i haven’t checked the booklet yet, but that 20k brake fluid change is just recommeded, right? i have brought the car to the dealer many times (some for the 15k, 30k, 45k, and 60k maintenance), and they did not say anything about the fluid being bad at the time (inlc. the multi-point insp. from other visits).

My bad. I did not notice the star next to the Brake Fluid schedule. The star designates severe driving conditions.

My dealer told me they base the fluid change recommendation on condition, which makes sense to me. Given that moisture accumulation is the issue, I don't know why they base it on miles in the book when time and location have more impact.

Exchange all the brake fluid when you install new pads.

This newest version V6 burns really clean. I have the Dealer install their bulk 5W30 oil. The same that they use in the Versa. If was keeping it forever I'd use their 0W20.

I should add that oil gets changed every 5K miles or about 2.5 times per year. But if the car only went 5K miles per year it would be only once per year.

For my '07 Altima, 2.5, Ohio, I used full-synthetic and changed oil and filter every 10,000 miles. I had the oil analyzed once, at the 10,000 mile mark on the oil and 130,000 miles on the clock and the tested properties in the oil showed that old oil to be good for another 3,000 miles, conservatively. When I sold her at 149,000 miles she used no oil during changes. I just got tired of driving her and wanted a MAX! Hope he Max treats me as well although I don't think I'll exceed 5-7,000 miles between changes on this one. I don't know the engine that well.
