Best Resale Value- '17 Maxima

Muscat -
Nissan Maxima has been honoured with the Kelley Blue Book Best Resale Value Award for the year 2017. The annual Kelley Blue Book Best Resale Value Awards recognises new vehicles that best retain their value over the first five years of ownership as per Kelley Blue Book Official Residual Value Guide 1. The award was presented in conjunction with the National Automobile Dealers Association (NADA) Convention in New Orleans.

The 2016 didn't fair this well, loses 34% in the first year, or almost $12500...that's massive. No way they turned that around in one year's production, that award is a ruse.

Don't believe me, do an autotrader search for 2017 used and certified. I'm seeing SR's and platinum's with under 10,000 miles for under $25k asking price for Cirtified. These cars had price tags of over $39-44k MSRP if I'm not mistaken.

Not passing judgement on the validity of this report, just reporting. Personally I thought the claimed huge depreciation of the '16 was a ruse. Not enough time to collect and validate new vs sale value to come up with this conclusion. May be same for '17 claims too, because basically they are the same car! No way to go from poor to very good value loss in two cycles of the same model. Bet most of the '16 depreciation grade was based on selling leased S models to auto auctions buyers and to private buyers. Those would naturally go for bottom dollar. I'd love to find out how they (whomever "they" are) go about documenting depreciation values.

As a car buyer who likes to hold his cars for a long time, it's not much of a concern to me how much it loses in its first year. On the other hand, it's actually a good thing since I almost always buy "lightly used", so a big deprecation just increases my savings... provided it's not due to something bad like the car sucking

Luxury cars depreciate faster than regular cars anyway. While the Max is not truly a luxury car, it has some luxury and sporty aspirations.

I'm with ya fishlet, young, low mileage, certified pre-owned all at a discount. I still hold onto a car for a long time too, but to knock off 30-35% off the initial purchase, and still keep it for 6-10 years, that's a lot of money left in the bank!

Back in 2010 I returned to the Maxima fold, leasing a new 2010 Premium with all the options. I had looked at other cars but when it came time to pull the trigger, there were huge discounts off the window prices which then were over 4200 bucks! Fast forward to my new 2016 loaded Platinum which stickered at over 44 grand. Once again I got nearly 5 grand off the list price buying in Oct of 2015. So of course there will be a large 1st year whump on the resale but then after all, I did not pay the retail number so the actual loss is much less. If you buy new, it is inevitable that depreciation will cost you. Nowa days you can find lightly used 2016 -2017 Maximas (not rental rigs) at some great prices. Let someone else take the 1st and second year depreciation and you end up with a great car that will easily go many troublefree miles. Yes those basic Maxima beat up rental cars do skew what the 2 year resale values at auction so it is a crapshoot on whether these cars will be anywhere close in reliability to what a single driver used Maxima is.

My lease is up in less than 10 months and I will probably go for another Platinum as my mantra is new and low miles, so I willingly pay the depreciation of 3 years and go new again. Of course this approach would be all wrong for anyone wanting to keep the car for many years. It costs to get new!

Agreed, and their is one bigger problem with the Maxima's resale value is Nissan is flooding fleet/rental companies with them and that hurts resale value. Initially Nissan was only sending S models to rental companies now they have flooded them with the total spectrum S, SV, SL, SR and Platinum's. I had a rental Platinum 2 weeks ago in Houston and there were several other Plats and SL's that day. One good thing about the Plat rental is that you are getting more of a luxury car than many other cars that they classify as luxury class at the rental agencies, was told that they may up the class on the Plat and SL versions soon from Premium to Luxury.

I think you're on track with this assessment.

I got an S at Enterprise for 20K. I drove a new 17 SR the day before, and this one was close enough to tickle my fancy for much less than the car I drove the day before. I also looked at an SR with 6K miles for 27.5 but it sold before I got back to it. I was actually kind of relieved to spend 7.5K less but I still long for the SR occasionally.

I wish I could get a Maxima when I go to rent a car. They always show that on the website, then when I go to pick it up they give me stupid Ford Fusion or worse. I don't imagine the rental places have that many of them, but that has just been my experience

Enterprise/national and Hertz have lots of them, they are usually listed as Premium rentals where as Fusions etc are Full size. With National you may get lucky as they tend mix the cars up in ES etc etc quite a bit, these are airport locations that I am referring to although!

I retract my statement then, i usually don't book that class of car. But it seems I never get the example car they say I'm gonna get. Speaking of rentals, I don't know why on earth the car rental prices have skyrocketed the past few years. Some places I like to visit in the summertime, Even lousy subcompacts are edging near $50 a day. That seems to be my single biggest travel expense nowadays. Most of the car rental brands are consolidated now, so they basically got a monopoly
