SR vs Platinum
Yes, if you think the SR has a harsh ride, try the Subaru WRX STi Limited edition, it will knock the snot out of you! I don't think the SR is harsh, I just traded my 2010 Max (loaded) for a 2017 SR and I really enjoy the ride quality.
Agree, I had a Subaru STi, that car was jarring, the SR ride on the other hand is very good, it's glued to the road but much less punishing than other sports cars.I think most of the people that complain drove Toyotas or Lexus in the past, those are known as really soft and comfortable cars but no road feedback.
Funny, I came directly from a 2015 STI limited to the Maxima SR. I loved the STI up until I didn't. Basically I started having to commute more often and the STI absolutely hated traffic. With our road construction season getting worse and traffic seemingly getting more congested, It was becoming a draining to drive. I hate to admit it now, but as much as I love manual transmissions, I don't think I can do it with an everyday car again. I'm not THAT old, but it wears on you.
As rough a ride as the STI is though , I still found it tolerable. With that I think its funny that people will complain about the ride in the SR's. People are even switching tires. Currently I have Michelin X-ICE on mine for our MN winter and I cant wait to put the "summer" tires back on for the better handling, harsh ride be damned.

I have always had SE's and most recently an '11 and '14 SV Sports. No way I could do without a sunroof. Was really disappointed in the features omissions on the gen 8 SR. Plus the PA roads are so bad that I no longer wanted the stiff ride with 19's and 40's. I'm now 50 and went with the old man's luxury version Platinum. It's silver with the Medallion Package, so it looks pretty cool with the concept car styled wheels. It also has the chrome rocker moldings and the rear diffuser. I love it!

Thats what we did. Bought the 2017 Platinum with Medallion Package and had the dealer swap out the Medallion wheels for the SR wheels. We test drove the car with platinum wheels first. Then test drove the SR. We figured the ride comfort would be somewhere in between if we had them put the SR wheels on. We were wrong. The ride quality was actually closer to the Platinum comfort, with the added benefit of slightly crisper steering with the SR wheels. Still smooth and whisper quiet on the interstate. SR wheels look really nice as well. We test drove the SR....way too rough and bumpy for us.
My 2014 Camaro SS rides smoother than the SR but our platinum with SR wheels is smoother than our Camaro.
Hope this helps OP.
Kind Regards,
Lou
I recently picked up a 2016 Max SR and I couldn't be happier with it. While it is a little stiffer than I expected with the stock tires, it still isn't what I would call a "rough" ride unless you're driving over absolute crap roads (I live in Louisiana, I know crap roads!). I find that it grips the road very nicely and accelerates way faster than I expected. I'll take that over a smoother ride.
And I guess I'm one of the ones in the minority, but I expressly decided against the other trim levels because I didn't want a sun-roof/moon-roof. As someone else stated, and I'm paraphrasing here, it's just a problem waiting to happen.
I never did test drive any of the other trim levels because once I saw the SR in Bordeaux Black, I had no eyes for anything else... btw, I'm turning 50 this year since someone was wondering about ages further up the thread.

I think I read that there was less headroom in the trims with the moon/sun roofs because of the mechanical stuff required to open and close the moon/sun roof having to fit someplace.
I had a 2010 Max that I really enjoyed. Replaced it with a 2017 SR and I could not be happier. Even the wife likes the car! I have no complaints about a harsh ride. And yes I had the sun roof on the 2010, but here in FL I just did not use it. I did, however use the paddle shifters -- so SR was the ticket!
