Is it possible to connect to CarPlay in the 2017 Maxima wireless? Thanks

I suppose its possible with one of these but you'd still have to plug your phone into something so its not really useful.

is it a hardware thing or is it something that can be changed with an update to the car?

It’s both. Last time I checked only 2 brands offered built-in wireless CarPlay. BMW and Mercedes and only on selected models. However all major aftermarket stereo brands comes with wireless CarPlays.
