Accord 2.0T vs 8th Gen Max drag race

WTF! This still doesn't change the fact that I'm avidly against 4cylinders replacing V6's, no matter how much forced induction you throw at it. I'll take the slower N/A V6... But still... Damn

Meehh.. these are family sedan. Regular commuter cars. Who VS what 0 to 60 is not really a real test. They are all the same from general perspective of view. It’s whatever feels better for you. I have chosen MAX for the looks and past relationship.

I'm with you. You have to feel a car... And that's kind of my whole point here. The significance here is because of what it represents for automotive culture as a whole. Naturally aspirated engines are great, and have linear, predictable behavior. They FEEL great! Not to mention, the sound and smoothness of a V6...

But the automotive industry is doing away with V8s and V6s in the name of "emissions and fuel economy", and this video isn't helping our case, because now they can add "performance" on top of that... You have a 4cyl engine with 258hp, beating a V6 with 300hp... If you think about that, its pretty crazy.

The 4 cylinder is still going to be rougher, sound ****tier, and have non-linear behavior because of turbo lag/surge, etc.... But nobody except car enthusiasts/purists will care about that. The general public will eat this **** up and pretty soon there will be no more naturally aspirated V6's left... There are barely any now. Honda/Acura replaced their 3.5 with the 2.0, Infinity did the same (3.7 with whatever is in the new Qx50), Nissan with the Altima (3.5 to 2.x, whatever)... And that means that soon these aforementioned brands will do away with their V6's across their whole lineup...

Only a matter of time before Toyota/Lexus (please don't do it Lexus)... The only Japanese brand that still has a V6 is Toyota/Lexus!

This is only the case with the average consumer car. Real sports cars are still thriving with twin turbo 6 cylinders, supercharged V8's and V10's.... Couldn't be a better time to get into a real sports car. Personally, I couldn't give two ****s about what's happening to the average consumer car.

Porsche Boxster used to have a straight 6... A world renowned straight 6... It now has a turbocharged 4cylinder.

Its all cars.

Trucks too... Ford expedition used to have a v8... Now its a twin turbo V6.

Funny I made a thread about this and was curious as well. Now I know! https://maxima.org/forums/8th-genera...cord-2-0t.html

50-70mph roll the Maxima wins 3.8 seconds compared to 4.4 seconds with the Accord. I THINK top end the Maxima would have it if taken all the way. The Accord has some wicked low end torque but probably runs out of steam as you get to max speed.

It's not all cars, far from it. Nothing wrong with a twin turbo V6. You know Godzilla has a twin turbo V6 at 565hp, right?

Well Infiniti still has the V6 albeit it not being N/A in the Q50 etc but still a V6 and Acura still offers a N/A V6 in the TLX and RLX as of current.

Sound is subjective. My wife has a EcoBoost Mustang, and I was initially disappointed that she didn't get the 5.0. I am 57, and grew up on V8s. I had a 1968 289 mustang, a Chrysler 383, GM 350, etc. However, that little 4-banger turbo has 310 horsepower and 320 lb-ft of torque, 5 less each than the 2010 Mustang GT with a V8. I have driven it a lot. I have also driven plenty of 5.0 and GT mustangs in the past. This ecoboost is fast and linear. It also gets high 20s for mileage in mixed driving and over 30 regularly on the highway.

It is as predictable as another other powertrain combination. Years ago no one wanted a V6, 'cause the all sucked. Now people complain about four cylinders and compare fours to six cylinders.

It's the new age, boys and girls.

In what world did the Boxter had a straight 6? If it did, it would not have been called a Boxster.

The boy racers might be upset with this speed test outcome but in the real world the V6 will spank the Accord from 30 to 100+

Seriously doubt it. This was from a 25mph roll which is close enough. The Accord took a clean win no doubt. C&D has the Accord doing 5.5 secs 0-60 and Maxima 5.7 secs 0-60 this looks pretty much spot on imo with those results.

I agree but i've done 5.4 sec 0-60 every time! 17' Max. Now this should not be a determining factor when car shopping unless you track your vehicle for $$$ and honestly WHO THE **** TRACK'S ACCORD'S AND MAXIMA'S? LOL, If you want a track car get an M OR AMG RS OR CHALLENGER ETC, ETC. These vehicles are "FAMILY SEDANS" that are made to have some sportiness

I owned a 2018 Accord 2.0 A10 for 6 months. Trust me, the MAX is 10x better than the Acccord. Yes, the Accord is lighter and has more low end torque but the powertrain experience is terrible. The tranny is ALWAYS shifting and when it downshifts it goes from 3-1 not 3-2-1, this makes your head jerk forward all the time. And I would agree that top end, the MAX wins, off the line, Accord has a little more zip, but that' it.

That is what I would have expected. The Maxima paired with the current Nissan CVT is fine at all speeds, but at its very best when accellerating from around 45MPH to 85 MPH for passing in short passing situations on the open highway. Takes my breath away.

My issue is the direction the auto industry is moving in... Steering is all numb and lacking feel, cars are basically smart phones on wheels now that stop for you and crap (which I HATE), and drivetrains are all going to have turbo lag and complicated nanny systems... I'm only 29 but I feel like an old fart because I'm starting to very much disagree with the way the automotive industry is going. Which sucks because I live and breathe cars.

I originally quoted a bunch of you and got halfway through my post and i accidentally refreshed refreshed it and deleted it all, so here is my half assed attempt at answering you guys:

1. Godzilla always had a turbo 6. Its the downsizing, and making up for the grunt with a turbo trend that I don't agree with.

2. The unpredictable characteristics I was referring to is turbo lag. N/A acceleration is linear. Turbo lag absolutely sucks.

3.Yes Infiniti still uses the V6 but if the QX50 is any indication of where they're headed, it won't be for long... Same with Acura... If the RDX is any indication of where they're headed, it won't be for long either. P.S. I see that you have a GS350 F Sport... That's my dream sedan right now. Test drove one about a month ago and absolutely fell in love with it. I want a 2015 (pre-facelift and standard nanny bs technologies) with AWD and the red interior! Kudos...

4.Google "718 Boxster flat 6"... It had a 6 cylinder.

5.My point wasn't to say that the Accord is somehow better than the Maxima simply because its faster... My point was to say that its crazy how they made it faster with a little less than 50 fewer horsepower.... And that, to me, signifies the death of the V6.

Which marks a sad day in history, because driving used to be about the visceral experience and feel... Now its about numbers on a page, and cars that drive for you. WTF happened!?

Sincerely,
A True Driving Enthusiast

You are incorrect about Porsche "straight 6". Porsche 6 cylinder engines are what is known as a "flat 6".

Well put, I also wonder who ends up with better average fuel economy? I am not a cowboy driver but I will make the engine work a little in getting up to speed on the expressway. I still get over 30 mpg with the Max! So the power is there with a turbo 4, but how hard does it spin up to do the work? And at what RPM? My vote is with the V6 as a tractable and smooth power source.

yes I misspoke when I said "straight 6". My point was, even sports cars are going from 6 cylinders to turbo 4s.

I assumed the accord would win, with the 0-60 listed in the mid 5 second range. Still dissapointing to see it proven. Nonetheless, I still think the Maxima has the "whole package", even if it's a bit slower off the line,

Hey man, yes I love my GS it drives good and has really good feel all around (handling/Steering feel etc) in Sport + mode. Probably my favorite car that I have owned besides the 03 Max SE that I will hold on to as long as it runs good, when I purchased it I negotiated that they change the rims to the 15 F sport rims instead of those bright finish ugly rims that they added in 16 and they said yes. What's weird is that they have the sporty looking copper colored rims on the '18 LS F Sport, '19 ES F Sport and IS F Sport but reverted to those bright silver not so nice rims on the 16+ GS F Sport. I looked for a 15 F Sport in the Champagne color with the red/burgundy interior and could not find one but I found this '16 about 110 miles away.

Forget about 0-60; how often do you line up with someone in the real world? It's all about passing times; the MAX is hard to beat in that category (and at its price level).

Exactly. I have been driving since 1949, occasionally drive aggressively, but have never in my long life done a flat-out zero to sixty, as it does not fit into normal driving situations and serves no constructive purpose.

man that's great! Yeah the newest year I'd want is the 2016, because after 2016, that emergency stopping crap was standard. At least for the 16 model year it was optional, and before that it wasn't even an option i don't think. So yeah, 15 or 16 for me. But I agree about the wheels. 2015 has such great looks all around.

i initially thought I'd want an is350 FSport AWD and I drove one and left that test drive feeling OK about it... Then I test drove the 2015 GS350 FSport AWD and was blown away at how much better the steering felt... So much more connected to the road and linear. No dead spot in the center like I felt with the IS.

And oh man, the difference in quality. GS is really an underrated car

According to Motor Trend, there's a chance the refreshed 2019 Maxima could use the VQ-4 cylinder...

No doubt. Maxima is a bit faster than Accord or other turbo sedans in the 50-70. No lag and the CVT actually responds well to a highway passing maneuver. Definitely agree that passing performance is where the extra power is noticed in the real world. The other test to look at is the "rolling start" or 5-60 mph time. The closer that number is to the 0-60 time, the more accessible the performance will feel in the real world. Look up some high strung turbo cars like the Focus RS or Golf R and see how much slower those are in the 5-60, in some cases it can be 1.5 or even 2 seconds difference. With the Maxima, the 5-60 is only a couple tenths slower than the 0-60 which means you can take advantage of the power without burning off the front tires and raising eyebrows of local law enforcement. I will give Honda credit, however, they are the first to create a turbo 4 that meets or beats overall performance of previous NA V6 engines.

my point exactly. Removing the V6 is the name of the game in the years to come in the auto industry.... Really a shame.... Probably won't be on the 2019 Maxima, but def on the next generation

You mean in a sedan? Or within the same model family?

You got it, there is no such thing as a VQ- 4 cylinder......All VQ's are and will be from 3.0 to 3.7 and the newer V6 from the Nissan family is the VR engines used in the 16+ Infiniti Q50, the new 4 cylinder in the upcoming 2019 turbo Altima is code named VC!

In the family sedan world, I mean. The earlier efforts from Ford, Hyundai, and GM couldn't quite match the Honda or Toyota V6 in performance, and were no better in fuel economy. Honda's new 2.0T breaks that mold.

do some free light weight mods, on the maxima,

-remove sparetire
-remove back seats,
-remove all season floor mats
-remove passenger seat
-strip all the plastic trim
-remove air conditoning
-remove all plastic engine covers etc.
the try again.

that accord would be much different if it was 6 speed manual transmission. I glade I stil have one of the last generations of maxi with 6 speed stick

That channel has more videos. The Maxima also got smoked by an Accord V6 and barely kept up with the Avalon. Maybe something's wrong with their particular car?

Something is a miss for sure. An Impala beating or hanging with an Accord? No way. Our last car was a fully loaded Impala latest gen V6 and the Maxima smokes it!

It may just be my imagination, but it seems every car I've ever owned has good days and bad days. Some of that just may be the weather I think.

I think the weather plays a part in steering feel too sometimes... Humidity and temp or whatever

Same here. I had a 2014 2ltz impala with an intake and got smoked late one night by a maxima platinum even though the impala has 5 more horses and more torque. We raced from 70 to 125 before letting off because of a constuction zone. Once we cleared the zone he was gone again. I should have been in manual mode when i raced the max because it holds 3rd gear to 7000rpm instead of short shifting to 4th. That 3rd gear is vicious on the impala. Also the impala that races the accord is modded with a tune and a cat delete. If you look through the vids you will find that it races a stock impala and smokes it by atleast 4 cars.
