Thank you so much for sending me this. I'll let you know how I make out. Hopefully they will just go right to the shock and not mess around with trying to take apart the rear deck first. Thanks again.
Got my rear left shock assembly replaced today and still got popping noise. Im pretty sure its the right side shock but the tech thought it was the left well looks I'm going to get both replaced under warranty. Im going in Friday again. So annoying.

The pop started on the right. Then a few months later, the left. So yeah. You’ll eventually have to get both sides done.
Mine went in today but they need to order parts so I have to go back. They also told me there is an additional TSB for some body parts or sheet metal where they apply adhesive? to certain areas. I will find out more when I go pick up my car tonight.

Thats news to me. Keep us posted. I’m just glad that I could help you guys. There were a few times where I got the “could not replicate” response. I finally took the service manager with me to hear for himself.

Very interesting, any way you could get the print out for that or some details on that TSB when you have it done?
@@Phantm006 Thanks so much for adding the service print out. I'm gonna try to bring it to the dealer at some point soon.
How did you get it covered under warranty? Are the shocks still covered for almost 40k? I'm at 48k miles right now... but I have brought it up with them before.
Unfortunately, by the time I got to the shop to get my car, the service rep who told me about the other TSB had already left so I was unable to ask him about this other TSB. Further, it's not listed on my work order yet. It only shows that they ordered parts for the shocks. When I call him next week to set up the actual repair after the parts come in, I will try to get more info on the other TSB. As for fixing the shocks under warranty, I am lucky that I only have 15,000 miles on mine. My 3 years runs out in February so I wanted to get it done. I don't know if TSBs are covered after the original warranty expires If I remember, I will ask that as well.

We’ve had other minor issues with ours that I eventually proved I wasn’t hearing things. Mostly suspension related. So when this came up I guess they just said OK. We also have an extended warranty. So. I guess it was either hey he’s probably not BS’ing and he’s been a good customer when he should’ve gotten pissed a long time ago. Or...it was covered under warranty. They didn’t say, I didn’t ask. I just know they said they were gonna fix it.
So my 17 is back in the shop since the ordered parts have arrived. They are doing the shocks (I am unsure if they are replacing the entire shock on both side or just part of the assembly). They are also doing work on the body using seem filler under TSB-18-032A. I haven't seen a copy of it yet. Finally, they told me there is a TSB on the brake pads for all wheels - I didn't get the number but will - and so they are doing that on all wheels as well as my brakes squeal every time i tap them. The car will be ready tomorrow. I;ll report back on how well the repairs worked.
PS - they gave me an 2020 Altima as a loaner. It's really nice not to hear the rear end clunk every time I go over a bump or pot hole. And surprisingly, I don't hate the Altima. If they ever came out with a true sports model of the car it might not be too bad.

I haven't driven a 2020 Altima, but for a number of years my wife and I owned a Maxima and a 3.5L Altima, both 2005. Although I drove the Maxima as "my car", on occasion I drove my wife's Altima also. I have to say, that car was just as much fun to drive as the Maxima. Or almost (a close second). So if Nissan started making V6 Altimas again I would strongly consider buying one ... but given the current trends I doubt I'll see another V6 Altima ever again.
BTW, here is the TSB on the body filler repairs.TSB-18-032A
Thanks for posting this, I printed it out and will take it to the dealer when I'm due for the 20k miles maintenance. Because yes, my 2018 Maxima has this problem, too.

I really wanna know what the TSB for the brakes are. I’ve had a few back to back issues with shake and uneven wear. I just replaced my back rotors about 2 months ago and I’m still having snake and vibration. I don’t know if they did any body filler work though.

Yup same would be a life saver to get that TSB if possible. My brakes continually squeal while braking between 15-0 mph. The service rep told me its cause I slam on the brakes but I never press hard on the brakes and non of the other cars I have had used to have this issue.
Got my car back last night. If anything the noise is worse than before. They replaced the left shock assembly. My work order doesn’t say anything about the body filler repair. So I don’t know if that was done. I imagine if they want to get paid for it they have to list it. Finally, the brake repair worked wonderfully. The brakes feel solid and no more squealing.
A quick question - is there supposed to be a cover over the speakers and amp in the trunk? There isn’t one now and I can’t remember for the life of me if there was before. The posted pic shows what it looks like now.

Thanks for any thoughts.
That is what my amp and speakers look like also. Did you get any information on the TSB for the brakes?

you’re hearing. I don’t know why yours would be worse. That’s odd. And are you referencing the brake actuator TSB? I did get that notification.
No. The service guy was gone but here is the service order. No TSB listed and the description listed isn’t exactly what I told him. But they got the brakes fixed. Maybe use the same complaints.
Hello,
Is this just a USA issue? I called dealership here in Canada and they advised there is no recall for this. I am experiencing something similar (grinding/rubbing/clunking noise in reverse coming from the rear). I tried to do a search in the forum and was unable to locate anything on this.
My issue was and is that when I go over a bump (like a speed bump) or a pot hole, I hear a metallic sound. After the repair to the left shock and the filler from the TSB I posted earlier, the noise is still present. I’m going to get the other shock done.
I don’t have an issue with a grinding or other type of noise in reverse.
The brake issue was a constant squealing every time I used the brakes. They also felt really soft. After the repair to the brakes they feel better then they ever did.
The noises/clunks over the bumps in my 2018 Maxima are now gone. The Dealer had the car for a week.
The Service Manager said that after contacting Nissan support, they were advised to take an air hammer to the welds in the inner wheel housing.
No parts of any kind were replaced.
All I know is that my car is quiet, and I am a happy man.
I hope this information can help someone else.
That actually makes a ton of sense. The noise I heard sounded like a metal pop. It’s odd that replacing parts alleviated mine; while a simple “bang on it” fixed yours. Well. If mine ever returns I know what to do. Glad you’re is now quiet too.

Thats awesome, great to know theres another route to go with the dealership regarding these bumps. Anyway you could repost the image? Its not showing up for me. Was it the service receipt?
Mine was fixed this week also. A 2017. The service tech said there was a bolt that was loose or broken in the strut or shock assembly (sorry, I’m not very tech oriented on cars) and said that he car went when over bumps it would bolt would hit a part of the car, creating the noise. They replaced that bolt or part. The noise is now gone. My service order sheet was blank when I picked up basically showing no work was done on the car so I don’t know exactly what part was replaced. I will get a completed service order receipt and post the part when I do.

Nope, unfortunately it's just showing a generic not allowed to see this symbol. I've tried on both my phone and two laptops lol. I'm really sorry to ask but could you try just attaching to your post? Or another image host?
Thanks!

I have a 2017 maxima platinum and I was reading your post and was wondering if the air hammering on the welds still solve your problem. I have the same problem it doesn’t sound like there’s anything wrong with the shocks Or anything like that it just sounds light plastic hitting against sheet metal when going over bumps on a patchey or bumpy road. I’m still under warranty so I’m going to bring it into the dealership and also show them your post and all the other post about this problem, hopefully yours is the easiest solution to the problem.
So I had the dealer look into the air hammer solution to the pop clunk and apparently that didn't work (tho I'm not sure if it was them trying to squeeze money out of me).
They ended up replacing both rear shocks ($500 total) and I think the pop clunk is gone! I can't get it to replicate anymore on normal driving on my commute though there is one bump over a gate to my neighborhood that I may have heard it pop this morning. Gonna try again after work and see if it still does it.
I have the same issue and the dealer just told me that they will order a kit to for the back seat assembly and if that does not solve noise they will look into changing my shocks
I have the same popping ticking cracking clunking call it what you will sound coming from my rear trunk rear deck rear suspension area. Can you tell I’m annoyed as f*#k!!!
Was wondering how many of us running dropped suspensions are experiencing this issue and if it’s related. My max is on Eibach lowering springs with oem shocks and stillen sway bar. Dealer claims this is my problem.

I’m on stock suspension and I am still experiencing a pop clunk noise from rear. Nissan tech favorite words “ oh sounds like you got something in the trunk moving around “ They tried to blame on my aftermarket sound system I literally removed every thing out my trunk and the noise is still there. I got them to replace one shock, they insisted it was the left but I told them right. Replaced left shock still got the noise. I came back and they readjusted something in the suspension but still got the noise. Common sense would be to replace the other shock but nope. So about 6 trips to the dealership still got the noise so annoying. I gave up on that dealership. Stateline Nissan in East Providence don’t ever bring your car there. I brought my SR to new dealership. Nissan tech says “ sounds like you got something moving around “ They going to look into it when they do the ABS recall. I’m so fed up
I still haven’t gotten the completed work order from my dealership but they eventually fixed the problem as I reported earlier. They “say” they performed the TSB for the pop clunk referenced earlier in this thread, they replaced the left shock (why the left, I have no idea), and then they said something was loose? like a bolt maybe and said it was hitting something else metal making the sound. They ended up fixing the issue. Maybe you could have your service tech call my tech to see if they will share what the solution is. The dealership is Bill Ray Nissan in Sanford, Florida and the service rep is Jimmy Wilson. They can say I’m the PIA with the white 17 Platinum with the clunk sound. Hope this helps.
Hi, another update on my side of things. Changing the rear shocks is still holding up after a week. I also emailed Nissan Customer Service and asked them to look into reimbursement cause this was definitely something from the factory and not something I did or a result of my driving.
I just got the call that they will reimburse me the cost for replacing the shocks, parts and labor so just keep that in mind too if any of you decide to go that route. My car has 60,000 miles too. I'm just glad its fixed... for now.
Now if only they coulda helped with all the interior rattles I'm having. Oh well.
I had the same noise in my 2017 Maxima. I removed the rear shocks and found the bushings at the top plate had not been secured correctly at the factory. I had ordered a new set of KYB shocks with new bushings. After replacing the bushings the noise was gone. I reused the original shocks as they only had 30,000 mile on them and had a better gas charge than the new ones.
