Light, I am nearing the end of my lease on my pearly queen, a 2017 white SR with camel interior. A local dealer has made a very aggressive proposal to put me in a new SR- and the car I am drawn to is the sunset drift. At first In thought the color was bit too intense, and my other choice was gunmetal grey- but, like you, the more I look the more I like it...I will be talking to the dealer next week...

denoose - There were many years of my life when I would not have looked twice at a burnt orange (sunset drift). I have had mostly silver, grey, white and regatta blue Maximas. But I'm thinking I would like to go out in a blaze of color, so have begun checking the inventory of lots of Nissan dealers within 200 miles. I'm probably going to wait until the COVID-19 vaccine is available (between next January and next March or April) so I can be out and about with it and hang out at the parts dept and the auto trim stores. But I do like the sunset drift. I do like the gunmetal also, but I lean to the sunset drift.

Prophecy99 - I have to be very careful with mods, because I don't want to spoil the classic clean lines we usually find in the Maxima. I do go for things like a large compartmentalized trunk storage device which helps so much with groceries. I do gloss my tires too much. Tasteful Maxima owners have a matte (natural flat) finish on their tires. I trim the side of the mud flaps so that they will catch all the water/slop off the outside edge of the tire tread, but will NOT stick out any further than than the sidewall of the tires. Helps keep the sides of the car clean. The flat black 1" wide hard rubber molding around the wheel well opening helps block door dings from careless drivers who park beside me when parking diagonally.

dauntlessmax -So difficult to answer.

I will never forget my silver '85 Maxime. I was actually emotionally in love with that car. I will never forget it. Drove it 206.000 miles.

My beige '89 was a clean, classic design that grabbed my attention from the start. Drove it over 200K miles.

My silver '97 was a tight, well-made vehicle that never had a squeak or rattle of any kind. Very fine car.

I loved my '00 SE, probably because the soft regatta blue was beautiful and different from any color I had ever had.

I loved my '04 silver SL which came with full size spare and tire, and had an unusually attractive roof/sunroof. I even liked the grille. Many happy miles on that car.

My white '09 Premium never required a single repair of any kind during the seven years I owned it. It was a perfect car.

My '16 silver Platinum has every accessory I could get, and is still as beautiful as the day I drove it off the lot. It has never let me down. My wife and I love the 360 degree around-view.

But, just as a coach usually won't name his 'favorite' player, I can't bear to pick one Maxima and leave all my other wonderful Maximas unmentioned. .

I picked this up today, 2020 SR in Sunset Drift...I'm not into naming my vehicles, but my wife is calling her "Penny"

Congratulations Denoose! We are looking forward to you observations on this great looking rig. Lightonthehill is probably bee-lining it to his dealer as we speak.

Thanks, Rob
This is Maxima number 8 for me, starting with a 1990 SE- black on black , 5 speed, 160 HP. LOTS of changes over the years, and even coming from a '17 SR this 2020 is a very fine revision of that car. Quite a bit more in the way of safety tech with the modern bells/ whistles. 360 degree camera is cool, the software in the infotainment system is upgraded and appears to be a bit crisper both in function and resolution. Controls- no changes- of course the new SRs have the pano sunroof and rear spoiler as well as the gloss black wheels- those are growing on me. Car is very smooth, and really strong. I have no issues with the CVT- had three previous cars with it and it's a proven product. You can bang off some fairly sharp up/ downshifts using the paddles quite nicely. Perhaps not a Porsche PDK but I like the tranny. More to follow as we put some miles on. The Sunset Drift is a pretty intense color, but after white/ gray/ white/ ocean/white/ green/beige/ black it is a welcome, bold color- as Light said, why not a blaze of glory, and it will be easy to find in a parking lot...

Initially, I was not a fan of the black wheels, however, the gloss black treatment on your car's wheels compliment that body color very well. Your comment about the improvements and revisions makes this car a great buy. It took me a while to realize the 2019s and 2020s also gained 2 extra knee area airbags and well as 2 rear-seat body airbags. Something I hope not to use but comforting to know about. Is it just me or does the Bose radio seem a little better now?

I'm proud of you, denoose. I Could not respond as quickly as I planned to, because I had misplaced my sunglasses. That first photo was far more intense than I expected. Much 'oranger' than school bus orange. The second photo was a little more like the sunset drift on the car I had seen at my dealer several months ago. And yes, I have been checking the inventory of Nissan dealers. There are a LOT of Nissan dealers out there, especially in the deep South. Not all dealers keep their online inventory up to date.

Because this COVID has grown much worse (we will soon be at 120,000 dead in the U.S., and will be past 150,000 dead by the end of September), my wife and I have sheltered even more deeply in place - we now limit our travel to one hour at dawn at the local Kroger each month. Period. This COVID is relentless. I have already lost three relatives to it, and am trying very hard to stop the carnage. As an old geezer, I am much more vulnerable than most. I also lost three relatives to the Spanish Flu virus in 1918. That was before I was born, and I never knew those three relatives. I do leave flowers on their grave sites occasionally.

Back to searching Nissan inventories . . .

This is a really tough time to be test-driving new automobiles.

Glad to hear you are minimizing your risks as the virus continues to impact our daily lives, Light! Yes, the photos are a bit orange, the car looks a bit more "bronze" out of the sun and I think my phone altered the color a bit. Suffice it to say it's a blaze of color, to paraphrase your words!

Stat safe and good luck to you and yours!

denoose - I seem to recall the sunset drift SR I saw as being a a shade between your second photo and the sunset drift Maxima robtroxel kindly posted above just a few days before you posted your new baby.

Depending on lighting and camera, etc, sunset drift can seem to be orange or burnt orange. One thing owners of a sunset drift Maxima know - If the COVID takes them, at least they go out in a blaze of color.

Whether the sunset drift is on an SR or platinum, the only interior color available is charcoal ascot leather. Last September I came close to ordering a sunset drift platinum, but held off when I found I could not order it with the Rakuda Tan Semi-aniline leather. interior, which was the most impressive interior color I had ever seen. Now I wish I had bitten the bullet and ordered it with the charcoal interior, which is also a fine color. My dealer is able to get the black rear diffuser & chrome bar installed the day the car arrives. I handle the rest of the additional trim, edging, etc, myself. To be fully honest, another reason I held off was the hope a 9th generation Maxima would be announced within a few months. It was, of course, not to be.

Great news for us! I am sharing Light's reply below: Let all take time to recognize him!Rob,

I'm Still hanging around, and still driving my 2016 Platinum. In fact, I just had it into my dealer (Nissan of Newnan GA) Friday for routine maintenance. Since they replaced the double-panel roof in spring of 2016, this car has never required any repairs of any kind.

I did pick up the official brochure for the 2023 Maxima while at the dealer's, but since my 2016 is in perfect shape, and has very low miles (thanks to covid concerns cancelling my life), and because I am getting too old (88) to add all the extra trim and accessories I added to my 2016 Maxima to a new Maxima, I will probably just keep the car I have until the Nissan ARIYA EV equipped exactly the way I want it appears on a local Nissan lot this coming winter or spring of 2023.

But, having owned nothing but Maximas since October of 1984, it is going to be really sad to say goodbye to my beloved Maximas.

I have not been as active online as I used to be because much of my time these last five years (since my stroke in 2017) has been spent sitting in either doctors waiting rooms or hospital waiting rooms. My wife and I are at that time of life when everything is measured in terms of days before or after certain doctor's appointments. We have both undergone several heart procedures. Thanks to covid, we have not eaten inside a restaurant dining room, or been to either of our children's homes since February of 2000.

I wish I could turn the clock way back to the 1950s and make that regular flight from Seoul, Korea to Tokyo and ride to nice restaurants in Datsun (precursor to Nissans) taxis. But that was so long ago. I did enjoy my five speed manual Datsun 200SX from 1977 until I switched to Maximas in 1984, when I picked up my 1985 Maxima with the incessant woman's voice constantly warning me about something I needed to check. I named that voice 'Gertrude' after my annoying Aunt Gertrude.

But I ramble.

You can post this post on the Maxima site if you wish. Thanks to the marvelous new AT&T fiber, my system is usually either half down or completely down.

Thanks for checking on me. I do miss my friends on the Maxima site.

robtroxel, this makes my day! Thank you! Oh my, it's so nice to know lightonthehill is still with us and doing well overall -- as is his 2016 Maxima! I can appreciate his and his wife's health challenges and having to deal with COVID. But the fact that he's still around and battling, and maintaining his incredible passion for Nissan and Maximas, is both inspirational and heart-warming. All the best to you, lightonthehill!

Great news indeed! I always read Light's posts with admiration for him. I once spent most of an entire evening trying to locate him using "Light on the hill" clues in and around Georgia. I never did have any luck. How did we get his email address?
