Question P17f1 code

I have this code on my transmission. The car was taken to someone who said they changed the transmission but the car had the same symptoms immediately after getting the car back. Someone at Nissan informed me that it sounds like the car was not re-programmed after changing the transmission, stated that after it was changed the car was driven before it could be re-programmed so the transmission was no good anymore because it basically picked up on what it was doing before since it hadn't been programmed with the new transmission? (is this correct?)
I have read that changing the transmission would obviously fix this issue, but does anyone have any more info I should know? I know nothing about cars so I need all the info I can get so I don't get scammed by anyone.
