Upgrading from 4th gen to 8th gen

It seems like the newer Maxima's have significantly more issues than the 4th gen 1999 Maxima SE that i've had since 2002. I haven't had any major mechanical issues. Cv boots, O2 sensors, and valve cover gaskets are the only non routine maintenance items. However, it's time to move on. So, is the newer 8th gens worth it or not? I hear the cvt saps the performance. Also heard that overall viewing clearance is much more restricted than my older max. Would you still get an 8th gen Max over the Q70, Camry, CVS, an Lexus GS?

Not that you’ve asked or that my opinion means anything, but I wouldn’t trade my ‘99 for just about anything …

I bought it brand new in MAR of ‘99 and it still makes me happy, satisfied and proud every time I take it out.

… and, it’s not simply an extra I keep in the garage. It’s my car.

I've had a 4th Gen, (97), 5th Gen, (03) and now a 7th Gen, (10) and I've driven the 8th Gen, (16) but I really didn't like the drive or the response of the CVT. All my Maxima's have made it over 150k miles with no major breakdowns before I either sold or traded them in. I believe my 2010 will be my last Maxima, I plan to drive it until it dies or starts down the money pit road. I've considered going to Infiniti but I'm contemplating getting back into a stick shift, so I'll have to see what's out there when the time arrives. It seems like Nissan is putting more emphasis on the Altima and the Maxima is not evolving like it has in the past.

I have had a 1999, 2005, 2009 and now the 2017. All have been great cars but the 2017 has been my favorite. If I had to rank it would be 2017, 2009, 1999 and then the 2005. The 2017 is the fastest with the best application of the CVT. Gas mileage has been great with 300 hp so I have no complaints. Also, I haven’t had any reliability issues other than the stuff you mentioned….guess that’s why I keep coming back. However, I do wonder what’s next as sedans doesn’t seem to be the hottest segment right now but I work from home and I have 45k on a 5 year old car that still looks good so it will be a while before I need anything else

I had a 1999 SE with a manual transmission for 15 years before I sold it to my nephew (who got rid of it last year). It was a very solid car that had some of the common issues (knock sensor, o2 sensors, oil pressure switch), but no major problems.

My 2016 SV is six years old now with only ~40k miles on it since I work from home, but it has been a trouble-free car and is more fun to drive than my old Maxima even with the CVT. I take great care of it and hope to have it for many years to come. No regrets with the purchase.

In a heartbeat. 55,000 and no problems yet.
