Matt93SE: porterfield bed-in and thoughts

Hey, thanks for your help. I bought my porterfields from their shop here in CA. I talked to their manager about bed-in. He said 300 miles of regular street driving. No special bed-in procedured needed or advised.

During those 300 miles, pedal was mushy, went to the floor and couldn't stop very well. Couldn't even get nose-dive. Well, after bleeding the master cyl once, and each corner 3x (about 6-8 oz each time), and no change, I said fock it. I bed-in the brakes this morn and it's much much better.

Pedal feel and stopping confidence is about where the Axxis Ultimates were. But still far short of Hawk HP+ pads. I'm gonna bed-in once more tonight and hopefully get a lil more improvement.

That kind of goes against all the technical brake-in stuff on the StopTech site.

Which part? I kinda rambled up there.
Oh and somebody pointed out to me that the technical term is "green fade".

The break-in procedure for brake pads on the technical portion of their site. In a nutshell, you need to burn off whatever stuff that put on the pads during the production process and properly transfer material from the pad to the surface of the rotor

Yeah, even the FSM says to do a bed-in. I pointed that out to the guy, and he said that's for factory pads, and that their Porterfield dont require it. Well, I'm a lil upset, Think I'm gonna take the rotor and pads out and start fresh, and this time do a proper bed-in.

The Stoptech article does mention that some pads don't require break in due to a factory break in process. However the factory pad only definition pointed out by the fellow is clearly wrong. Even my Ferodo pads in the AP kit require minimal break in (box instructions - install, drive on track, several hard stop, and ready to go)

Bedding in is a must. Normal city driving doesn't get the pad material hot enough to transfer to the rotor thoroughly.

When I did the bed in, it was after breathing in brake cleaner fumes for a couple hours and when I started the series of hard stops I suddenly felt like puking.

Lol, I actually get high off that smell. :-) Boy do I miss it.
I took everything out, cleaned it up, and put it all back together. About to bed-in now.
