Z32 BBK Clearance help?

Do you guys think ill have enough clearance?

On the tape measure i have about 2.25". This was measured 5.25" out from the center of the wheel. Now the spin on this is, the calipers have been shaved. The whole nissan writing has been shaved off. I can measure the thickness of the caliper, id say an easy 5mm was shaved off. It is fine in terms of structural, my freind has run them on his 240sx for about 3 years with no problems and he races it every weekend.

I figured id end up needing 10mm spacers, but seeing as the calipers are already ground down i might not need them. Reason why im asking and not trying is because i dont have my Z32 rotors yet, so if i put these on my stock rotors, will the calipers sit in the same place in comparison with the Z32? Thinking about it i think they will cuz it bolts onto the stock location, but im not 100% sure.

Alright here are the specs. From the inner side of the caliper to the outer most edge it is 1.35". So if the pistons were pushed all the way in, thats the measurement from there to the outside edge where the nissan lettering would be. Id say atleast 4mm was removed from the caliper.

Here are some pics showing the clearence and the calipers

Thanks for any input!

Chris

If you were wondering, thats about 5 hours worth of work. You should have seen how dirty these calipers were. I went through 1 wire brush, lots of sandpaper 2 cans of brake cleaner and etc. 4 coats of VHT caliper paint, 2 coats of clear engine enamel. Then they were baked for 30 minutes. Suppose to help the chemical resistance.

The caliper will be located in the proper position when you bolt it on, regardless of which rotor you use. I would just install the stock rotors for fitting purposes. The correct rotors will simply be thicker on each side, so the stockers will still be good for this use. You could then determine if you have sufficient clearance for the calipers to the wheels while waiting to receive the correct rotors.

Easy for me to understand, hard to explain though.
I hope that makes sense.

Yep makes sense. Even though the Z32 rotor is thicker, the caliper would still be mounted in the same place. Although i havent really heard of shaving the caliper on this forum, i hear it is pretty common over on the 240sx side. If you shave off the NISSAN lettering thats probbaly a good 2-3mm, more so if you shave off a bit more of the alumium you could probably squeeze a bit more out. Obviously its not recommended to go extreme on them, but if you are worrying about clearence and you dont want to have to run large spacers this could be an alternative.

As of now im going with the Z32 30mm aluminium calipers, Brembo Z32TT rotor, PDM Racing 240sx to Z32 conversion lines, russell speed bleeders and OEM Nissan pads in the front, with hawk hps in the rear. Thought it would be a better idea to go with a less "grippy" pad in the front to try maintain some of the brake bias, although the rotor isnt bigger, actually a tad smaller, but thicker, so it should stay relatively close, compared to the 13" cobra setup

Don't mess with the OE pads.

I recommend Bendix IQ or Raybestos Quiet Stop. they do great for street and semi-aggressive driving. If you go to a track day or are doing some mountain driving, you might want to step up to something a bit more aggressive though. Hawk HPS front and rear or so.

Heh yeah, i said screw oem pads, even with my discount 10% over cost, they were still 76$, where as i can get the hawk HPS for 71.

I ran into a few problems test fitting them today. Kinda sucks i was in a bad mood to begin with though.

There is no way in hell these would clear without spacers LOL. It wasnt even close it kinda sucked. So i will need 10mm spacers.

The other problem i had was trying to bolt the caliper to the torque arm, i think i might need to run a thread chase in there to clean out the threads, but it went in alright, then got difficult to thread in.

I should know by now little issues like these are bound to arise in anything that isnt designed for the car lol..

If you are using the Maxima caliper bolts you need some flat washers. The threaded insert part on the Z32 caliper is not threaded all the way thru. I found out the hard way.

ahhh i see. Too bad i didnt know about that before LOL. I just assumed i could keep going then it hit the end. I guess ill see how much the Z32 bolts are, if not ill just get some flat washers. thanks man!

This may be a little off topic, but did baking the caliper after u painted it help make the finish smoother, because this will save me money on powdercoating. Also, what temp did u bake them at?? before the paint dries??

I baked them according to VHT's recommendation. Basically it just helps its resistance to chemicals and i gues makes it harder.

Powercoating will obviously be the better choice, but IMO you will be fine just painting them and doing a coat or 2 of clear.
