Shortened Koni/Eibach review thread

Well I've had these Konis and Eibachs on my car long enough to write a little review of them. Here's a little background info...for the last 4 years the car has been on AGX/H&Rs along with a host of other mods, including
FSTB
ES motor mounts
ES bushings (all)
Stage 2 LTB
Stage 2 WSP SFCs (old version)
Traction bars
Ben's rear mounts
17x8 Enkei RPM2 wheels, 17 pounds each
No aftermarket RSB

To perpare for the Konis/Eibachs I ordered roughly $250 worth of suspension rebuild parts from Dave B.

Since I wasn't comfortable cutting up the Konis, I sent them off to Jon (JSutter), who was nice enough to do the dirty work for a small fee Jon did an EXCELLENT job with the Konis, and even painted them to match the Eibachs If it weren't for Jon's research and work I would have never thought to trim the Konis, and I couldn't have done this without him. Thanks Jon!!

Moving on to the normal install....I'm lucky enough to know Patrick (PHenryiv), who has helped me work on my car more than almost anybody else. Even though he hasn't had time to work on his own car, he offered to help me with my install, so I drove to his place and we (he) got to work. If it weren't for Patrick my stereo would still suck, my interior would never have gotten finished, and my suspension would still be kicking my ***. A thousand thanks go out to Patrick for all your help, my car wouldn't be where it is without your help.

Without getting into too much detail about the install (I may make a separate thread later for that), I would like to note that the one thing that gave us the most trouble was the trimming of the D-shaped hole in the front upper mount (IIRC) so the circular Koni threads would fit. Once we figured out what was going on Patrick devised a solution and got it all to work.

One thing we noticed was the rear rubber bushings that go under Ben's rear mounts are completely squished from the mounts not really sitting flush. Made me contemplate going back to stock mounts.

Fast forward a few hours, and we have the Konis set at 75% stiffness, and installed in the car. I would like to note that we used the upper perch on the rear Konis to help rear sag.

Now, for the actual review:
Well I have actually driven my car very little over the past 5 weeks because of a busted axle and some complications from a new install, but I got to drive her for a bit today and here's what I say...it's not as big of a difference as I was expecting. Over smooth highway roads, the car does feel more isolated from road irregularities, which is always a bonus. The 'crashing' that occurs going over harsh bumps is still there, but I think it may be slightly muted. The extra isolation may be partly due to replacing everything in my suspension, some of the 11 year old parts were pretty beat up.

I haven't had much of a chance to really push the car to see if it handles any differently, but I would say it's stiffer, with a little less body roll. However, my opinion may be tarnished because I've been driving around an old SC300 5-speed while my car has been out of commission even since I found out my CV joint was busted during the suspension install. The SC300 is so smooth and isolated, and has tons of body roll. I will try and update this thread when I get a better feel of the handling characteristics. I will say that the car tracks very well and feels very stable approaching triple digit speeds.

I am getting some vague clunking from the front right suspension and from the rear left suspension. I will have to diagnose those noises later.

Well I've been awake for 30 hours straight, and I can't write anymore without making my eyes bleed. I will update this later when I get more seat time.

Big thanks to Jon and Patrick!! I've finally finished with all the suspension on this car. In terms of suspension, this car is complete. It won't get any better without coilovers, and I'm not sure how much of a difference they would make. With the car feeling as good as it does, it makes me realize the weakest link at this point is the steering. I'm seriously considering upgrading to the 99 SE steering rack to stiffen things up a bit. Any thoughts on this?

really? That was one of the easiest parts for me, took less than five minutes with a rat tail.

And I hate to say it, but I think your suspension is still bottoming out over large bumps. I noticed before I shortened my Konis that it would still "crash" and buck over decent sized bumps, then when I shortened the driver's side it got waaay better (but I still drove with caution over the bigger bumps). My guess is you're just expecting the suspension to be able to soak up more than it can and are smacking the bump stops, immediately exciting your chassis into vibration, especially if you have full chassis bracing.

Let me rephrase that....it wasn't hard to trim the mount things, it was just unexpected and it took me a while to verify that it was normal before we cut anything.

You're right, I think I was just expecting too much from this setup. I was probably expecting Lexus ride comfort and Lotus handling....ok, not really, but I think I was just expecting too much. You can tune suspension all you want, but with geometry like this I don't think there's a whole lot that can be done. It's as good as a 4th gen can get.
