Can the camber be changed w/o installing camber bolts? From what I've read on here toe-in is the only adjustable dimension.

My car is lowered on eibach springs and after I put them on I took my car in for an alignment. After a few thousand miles I noticed that the inner edge of my front tires was wearing rather quickly. I took it back to the shop and they fixed it.

Fast-forward another year and after having the front suspension apart again I took it back to the same shop for another alignment. Same scenario played out except this time I took it back in at the first signs of premature tire wear on the inner edge. They fixed the problem once again. This time I asked what they specifically did to fix my problem. The guy who did it told me he gave the front wheels an additional 1/4 degree of positive camber.

So my question is: can an alignment shop actually adjust your camber (and castor, for that matter)?

 

There really isn't any factory adjustment. When you put the lowering springs on, it made the lower control arm more horizontal, making the angle to the strut tower sharper. Hence the additional camber. The only way I can think of to take that camber out is to use camber plates, or a smaller bolt in the top spindle hole. On my Ksports, the top hole were the spindle attaches to the strut is oblong, and additional camber can be added or taken away.

 

There's enough slop in the bolt holes on the factory equipment to get about 1/4 degree of movement in it.

If you have Eibachs and are having alignment issues, you have something else wrong somewhere. wheel bearing, ball joint, control arm bushing, something.

 

I'm not having issues, all front end parts are new, both driver-side and passenger-side tires were wearing exactly the same...So you think he adjusted the camber via sloppy bolt holes?

 

Eibachs are not low enough to throw your camber off that much that it affects tire wear appreciably. Either your toe is wrong, or something else is bent/worn/loose, as Matt said.

Take your car to a different alignment shop. You should not be having camber issues with eibachs

 

I found that if you go into a shop and Tell them exactly what you want for a camber setting and tell them you want a spec print out. They will ACTUALLY align our car...

 

couple of noobish questions(regarding suspension)
what exactly is a good camber setting for our cars(3gen)?
fsm says -1*00' to 30' for front, and -1*20' to 10'
first what do these numbers signify, degrees, and partial degrees?

when i get my car re-aligned, i want to know so that if they try to give me some bs, or whatever i can just tell them.

should both wheels be exactly the same? or just as long as they are in spec?

 

Here is a pic of the strut assembly w/o the hub assembly attached. I believe this is how alignment shops adjust the camber.

 

Most will claim that it's impossible to adjust the camber and act like you have no idea what you're talking about if you tell them otherwise.

 

wearing of the inside edge can also be caused from high speed cornering. After i put my springs ( eibach prokit) in, I was getting "brave"..lol My friend has the same springs in his car and they dont wear as fast. If u have Eibach prokit, it wont change the camber to the point where u need camber bolts. but if u have sportlines .. then u need them. I`ve tried slotting the holes on my struts like in that pic and it wasn`t that good. A nice bump will cause th strut to shift. For reference on getting camber bolts,1st-4th gen Max use 12 mm bolts. 5th-current gen use larger 14mm bolt.Hope this helps

I have a 1991 Maxima. I just put wheels from a 02 Maxima on it with 215/50r17 Falkens. I want my suspension done now. What do you recommend from experience? Would it be a good idea to go to les schwaab and have them do my suspension? thanks
