air bag question...

I am looking to drop my 3rd gen, but i don't want to go full out air bag's because of the loss of cornering ability, and the $$$.

My main reason for wanting air bags is ride height control.....for practical applications. If i see a big bump/pothole, or a bad entrance/exit or something, i would liek to be able to raise the car to avoid damaging my kit, components, etc.

any thought on helper air bags used inside the coil springs? or any other alternatives?

I have seen "Bag over strut" type kits that replace the spring over the strut or coilover housing...makes for an easier installation and better performance. Still not going to be cheap though if thats what your going for, expect 1500+ for quality...

Hope that helps a little, good luck

yeah, no....i could get a full computerized air bag kit for $2k for the 3rd gen.....with full air struts and everything, but thats a little high for me.

hence the reason for trying to make a PASSIVE simplistic, yet functional ride height adjustment system, while still implementing the existing suspension

Problem is that you almost HAVE to go with an airstrut for the front at least, and you will pay at least $500 just for the front. You can do just the rear for about $500, but that doesnt give you much adjustability. I have looked into this, and have a brand new air setup that I had for my S10 (which is sold), but there seems to be no real "economical" way of bagging the front at least.

You could go with a hydraulic setup and save a few dollars, but you are still looking at $1K+.

there aren't any laod assist options for maximas that i know of. i do know what you are talking about because i was thinking of getting them in my b-body days. if you want on-the-fly adjustability air or juice are pretty much your only options.

with the universal air suspension kits i sell, you can retain/improve handling depending on what struts you match them up with but the cost is what it is.

don't bother. if you make your car that low, you're going to ruin the suspension geometry and your ride will absolutely suck, not to mention the tire wear.
the 3 gen just isn't designed to be able to be lowered much more than 1" without seriously affecting the geometry. my suggestion is to put a set of Eibachs on it and call it a day. springs any lower than that pretty much just ride on the bumpstops.

I'm talking about using eibachs or sprints, with a height assist bag inside the spring, acting like a bumpstop, and when inflated, lifting the car via both top and bottom of the strut housing.

when i had intrax the first go around, it rode great....my high speed cornering was excellent, with little bumpsteer to be had at all, but my camber was way out of whack, and i went through a set of pirelli PZero Nero's in under 2 months....so the only thing i'm still doing is finding a compatible pillow mount, or making the top of my tower adjustable, similar to a pillow mount.

Also, i'm not lowering it down to 1"....but at my current ride height with Tokicos and Stock springs, my front bumper is 4 - 5" from the ground, so i can imagine that my ride height will be around 2-3" when i put drop springs on there.and besides, the whole purpose of this air bag idea is getting the body higher for bad entrances/potholes/speedbumps/etc.

Cool

I just removed my full F.B.S.S. air-ride setup (2 compressors, 2 tanks, 10 switches, 10 valves, 2" bell drop spindles, all compression fittings, etc.)...it's for sale

It was fantastic to be able to drop the entire car almost laid-out on the ground with the car resting on the tires ... OR I could raise it up like a 4x4 to an inch above stock height!
