D2 coilovers - Installation Prep

What's up Maxima.org,

I'm preparing a set of D2 coilovers for installation. I did some reading about how buying ES spring isolators will reduce the noise in the rear coilovers, and also to leave about ~1" gap between the spring and lower perch as well.

This is a PM I received from looslip regarding redoing the rear coilovers with ES:

It comes with 1 pack of bushings. I'd recommend buying another set for the other side. This goes between the spring and the spring seat on the rear coilovers. I found that this reduced the noise of these coilovers by a huge amount! The isolators that came with it got shredded after just a few hundred miles and I had to redo everything with ES bushings.
You'll want to coat them in some heavy duty grease or white lithium or something of that sort...

You can get the bushings at:
http://www.summitracing.com/
I remember it took them a while to ship me a set because they don't normally stock the size we need for the D2's. Here is the part number you need: ENS-9.6103 (Black)
I would call them instead of ordering online.
Does anyone have any more insight on this, did it work for you, how to do it?

I also have a question regarding the front coilovers - there are four screws on the top of the mount, what are these for?

Seeing as how I bought these used, they are fully assembled. Any D2 owners willing to share how many miles they got out of them? The seller told me they rode like brand new and were used in a very mild environment (California).

Thanks for your time,

Moncef.

Seeing as how you got them used, I'd say they are due for a rebuild before you bother installing them. No reason to install them twice yah know.

I'm keeping that in mind. I just e-mailed D2 regarding prices on rebuilds.

Okay D2 says they want $120 to rebuild each damper. I'm gonna send the front ones out for rebuild and take my chances on the rears - They are still easy to adjust and they aren't leaking. So we'll see what happens.

Not trying to jack the thread but, would some ES isolators be beneficial if I'm installing a spring/strut combo? Probably wouldn't lower the car as much though and since they aren't adjustable like CO's might defeat the purpose.

I don't think so mainly because the coilovers don't use OEM spring isolators - and the reason I'm putting ES spring isolators in my coilovers is because they tend to tear themselves up if the car isn't setup right.

This is confusing...does this look right? There is only one threaded head coming out of the rear damper...

I either have to find a nut or get a new one from the hardware store, it probably dropped out of the box and rolled away somewhere when I pulled everything out.

What's up guys - I put the front ones on. I have em set to full-soft so they ride just fine. However I'm getting a groaning/grumbling noise over certain parts in the road from my passenger side coilover and I'm wondering if it's the pillowball mounts. The driver's side is dead silent.

Has anyone had this issue before? I'm gonna take a look and make sure everythings still tight but I wanted to check with the .Org to see what to look for first.

I havent had any grinding issues, although I have popping, not sure if its my coilovers or CVs..

I'm bumping this thread.

I bought a new strut core from D2, to rebuild my blown coilover. Does anybody know how to separate the pillowball mount off the old strut core? I've tried for hours.

Thanks!

Update!

Rebuild the blown coilover, car rides butter smooth, corners flat, I'm getting a little popping noise from the pillowball I believe.

Also put my rear wheel spacers on

At least my car is sparkly.

Actually, I lied. It rained today.

I'm thinking I'm going to put the engine management on hold and get coilovers. I'm sick of the jarring ride on the factory struts.

D2 coilovers set on full soft rode smoother than my factory SE suspension

Well, it wouldn't be so bad if I wasn't riding Progress springs on my OEM struts.

I've been set back $150, though. I got a speeding ticket today. So that'll be wonderful.

Update. Got the car aligned, no noises to speak of.

I'm going to get the rears ready. I'll check the spring isolators to see if they're damaged, I have one pair of new ES ones and I need to get another pair, but a lot of places are saying it will take ~4 weeks to have them

For the rear ones I have to use the OEM upper mounts. Do they require modification? Should I buy new rear upper mounts or get a spring compressor and use my old ones?

Thanks guys.

Okay. I just got off the phone with D2, they cannot sell me their OEM spring isolators and their new spring perch is the same one they run on every coilover they sell.

They said I don't need isolators on the bottom coilover (which is fine) but I need them on the top plates, and my ES ones aren't fitting.

Their OEMs have been discontinued, and I can't even get the complete top mounts from them since it takes 6 weeks for them to get ahold of it. So basically I'm screwed.

Edit. What would happen if I ran with just the top plates and the associated hardware, but without the rubber isolators between the spring?

Update.

Put the rears on, install was easy. I ran without isolators on the top, and I don't have an isolator on one side below the spring. Holy **** noise! Sounds like AK's firing

Also, they're seized up pretty bad so I cannot adjust the ride height

Now I need to call D2 and ask them for a new spring perch and try and remedy this height problem. Already soaked them with WD40 does any body have other ideas?

LOL! It'll be like you're doing drive-by everywhere. Maybe you can try ordering from Ksport since they have similar setup. And what do you mean by they seized up?

The lower mount and the bottom collar are stuck on the threads of the shock body so I literally can not adjust the height that they're at.

I'm gonna try and take them to a shop today and see what they can do for me. As far as the bottom isolator goes I'm gonna call D2 again and see if they carry one, or I'll cut one of mine and wrap it around as best I can.

I'll give it a try, thanks.

Does anybody know how similar the K-sport and D2 coilovers are? I hear they're made in the same factory.

And I know K-sport sells the spring isolators AND spring perches so if I get both I can put them on the D2 shock body and eliminate noise, if they're the same size.
