Spring rate Q
Spring rate Q
I recently switched from Eibach/Illumina setup to Tein SS coilovers. I have an aggressive wheel offset at +25 on a 17x8 rim. With the original setup the tires never, ever rubbed. Now i am on the coilover and i seem to rub on every bump. According to the spring rate thread, the Eibachs are rated at 347 lb/in, and the Tein SS says the springs provided are 340.
So assuming these numbers are correct, why the heck am i rubbing with the coilovers? I'm actually thinking of upgrading the rear springs up to 447lbs which is 2 steps higher. I can;t put anyone in the backseat of my car right now.
Anyone have any insight on this?

How did you set your preload?
I highly doubt the Eibachs are actually 347/~6k springs. That just doesn't sound right. More to the point, I think that 6k springs are too soft for our large cars. I had Eibachs on my car for years and when I upgraded to my BC coilovers, all body lean disappeared. Granted I'm on 9k front 8k rear (so ~500/450) springs, but the Eibachs just didn't feel like a 6k spring.
There is no way that going from a 347 to a 340 spring would be noticeable to any driver. That's like a 2% change in spring rate, and would not affect the car in the way you're describing. I would check the preload and make sure the ride height hasn't changed from a loose locking ring or something. But yes, if you're at all interested in improving your handling, I would upgrade the spring rate. Even with a 9k/8k setup, my ride quality is vastly improved over my old Koni/Eibach setup. It's mind boggling how awesome it is.
Here's a link for spring rate conversions if you're interested.

Teins do not have preload. To preload them the car would be 4" higher than stock.
I'm happy with how the front feels, but the rear is far too soft. Am I going to have a problem with 6k front and 8k rear? I'm not sure if I want to fork out another 300 bucks on this suspension

You can run 8k in the rear, as I do, and not suffer any adverse effects, just beware that the rear end of the car is going to be a lot more lively. I would balance it out with 8k fronts. I don't think the spring rate is your problem, as a 2% change in spring rate should have basically no effect on how the car sits/rides. I think your problem lies elsewhere.

Teins only have a lock ring for the bottom perch. You don't spin the shock, just adjust the height of the spring. Theoretically, if you go over a large enough bump the upper flat of the spring will come away.from the upper mount and slap when the car hits ground again.
I have a feeling that the eibach spring rate is higher than posted in the org. I know they are progressive but the stickies show them at 347 maximum.
